exact overclocking tool for my D810

OK!

This notebook has been out for a while, and I’m sure the stuff I want to do now have already been done. So…I’m hoping for some good answers, so I can pursue the things I want to do with my old trusty. Considering I don’t have any other CPU right now, please leave out the pin mod option at this time. I’m trying to work with what I have right now, thanks!

First I would like to “Overclock” the CPU (Pentium M 740), so let me know when, what, where and which programs you’ve used to overclock this particular model. Will do the overclocking first, to see if I want to shell out something on a Pentium M 770

Now that the most important part of what I want to do is out of the way; would an x1800 work in my notebook?

Overclocking is not really possible/ effective through software... the D810 is BIOS locked. Plus, overclocking in a laptop is generally a poor idea given the limited cooling available and extra heat it generates.

No, you cannot upgrade the video card to x1800, none is compatible form factor.

I hear ya bro, but the heat sink on the D810 does a good job cooling the CPU. It’s just a shame that we can’t use a bigger one for the GPU. With all this being said…this is my desktop replacement notebook that I sometimes carry around. I mostly use it for encoding and burning DVD stuff, while I game on my Desktop (Dell Optiplex GX620 with ATI x1950 and earthwatts 550PSU added). While I’m very happy with the speed of this notebook (else I wouldn’t have it), I would just like to see 2.0 or better on the GHZ side of things. If someone has used software to over clock the same model I have, I would like to know? I’ve already added AS5 on my CPU and GPU, so heat is not the enemy here. I’m not interested in over clocking my GPU (ATI Tool), since that would only make for a better benchmark, not overall performance in that what I do…Unless we’re talking about changing the whole thing all together to something like a 6800go or better.

Does ATI have any mobility cards besides the x300/x600 that would work in this notebook?

Nope... its not to do with what ATI release, but rather what Dell choose to have made in the various form factors that they use. You don't have many options that would fit unfortunately.

The Nvidia GPUs should work fine... at least the ones outfitted for an M70. The case/motherboard are identical.

I would be happy to slap a 6800 go in this lappy, but there is no way in 2008 I’m going to pay the price of some of those cards I’ve seen on eBay. Anything higher than the vanilla 6800 would be a waste of time for me, since I’m not going to be worried about playing the latest games on max settings. If that was the case, I could sell this lappy and buy one with all that already there. And seeing the difference between a 15 inch notebook screens beside my 24 inch widescreen on the desktop, takes away any doubt that I would not spend too much on a video card for this lappy. Heck! I’m already getting 70+ fps playing quake 4 with this x600. Playing back quake 4 demos produce even higher results, depending on what I disable.

Why wouldnt this work??

It's the same size as the x600 I have in the lappy now.

The card you linked to is not compatible.

OK sakor 1.....Then which of these cards would be a better option over the other, the 6800go, 7800go or the nvidia quadro 1400go which really just turns my notebook into a precision m70. With that being said, I heard that there are drivers that turns the quadro into a 6800go.

I have not heard of anyone successfully upgrading the D810 to a 6800 or 7800 go. The main reason being these require a much larger heatsink that will not fit in the D810 chassis, in addition I don't think the form factors of the card itself exactly matches. So even if it did, you would be worried about heat then... those cards are hot and you just don't have the required airflow.

But that being said, the graphics options available in the M70 may be the way to go... although I don't think the asking price for those quadros is worth it over the x600....

Looking around, there has been one or two who have successfully upgraded a D810/M70 with 6800/7800. With that being said..what about this card?

NEW DELL NVIDIA FX 1500M 256mb VIDEO CARD YF226

Put your thinking cap on sakor1

Nope. The 1500m was for the M90, a 17-incher and completely different form factor. One look at the video card tells you this:

D810 video:

M90 video (1500m, 2500m):

You could upgrade to the 1400m as in the M70, but as I said earlier, it is probably not worth the cost given the amount of actual performance gain you would see...
