Partions Confusion

well it looks like i already have a partion on my hardrive. 2 - 70ish
ones the C:\ and other D:\

Now can i install ubuntu on the D drive and still be able to use it for storage on windows or do i have to make another one
also how much space does ubuntu take up to install

no, if you use D for an ubuntu install it will no longer be usable as storage. If you still want to be able to use it for storage, you'll want to repartition D and add an extra partition for your ubuntu install.

If you just want to play with linux you can get by with 5 or 10 GB. But I'd suggest doubling that so you can install some programs and save some data. the more you can spare the better.

My ubuntu install takes about 4.1GB so far. It is just the base system with a few add ons to watch movies and other day to day activities.
