Build quality relative to Thinkpad T40 ?

I'd like to know how the 'current' thinkpad line stands up to the legend, also, how do the HP business models compare? Especially the nx9420, will it feel plastic and flimsy compared to a t40?

I don't want to sound like a thinkpad fanboy, but with my current experience with other peoples' acers and dells... Suffice to say i was afraid they would break when I picked them up.

taking in that u owned a Lenovo before, suggest that u walk into a computer store (best buy etc ...) and "feel" the other brands and decide for urself. Many other than Lenovo brand/model owners had their own opinion without ever own a Lenovo (and vice versa)

cheers ...

My last company issue (worked for IBM) was a T42, I took that thing all over the world and it never let me down. Tomorrow I'm supposed to get a new Thinkpad Tablet and will be reviewing it shortly. I don't work for IBM anymore, and I parted on bad ways, however their laptops are tops.

Honestly, any business laptop is durable and it's made that way. Business laptops are made to be used for light work - word, internet, ppt, etc. However, Lenovo/IBM are ahead of the pack as far as durability goes (looking at customer call-ins to manufactuers (consumer report)). But keep in mind, any business laptop will pretty much be durable for your needs. Also check out the Toughbook line from Panasonic.

Thanks for the replies !

I take it the quality of the business laptops in general has improved lately, meaning the difference isn't as big between a IBM(Lenovo) and others. So how tough are they nowadays, can they take a fall or a head-butt to the keyboard ?

Oh, and I don't need a vandal-proof toughbook. These things are overkill.

If you wanted to go with a strong (almost military-grade) laptop that looks like a consumer laptop. I suggest you look into the Dell ATG laptop. It has a 500nit display (the brightest lcd ever made by any laptop maker to date) and it can be dropped, from my recollection, a good 3-4 feet. It's a great laptop, check it out.

actually, some of the Toughbooks you mentioned earlier have even brighter LCDs.

I beg to differ, but correct me if I'm wrong. Some of the brightest notebook displays are around 250nits (at the highest), the ATG's display is double that (500 nits). Bascially the extra brightness is for use in outdoors...but I do believe that this is the brightest screen on a laptop made to date

The following is a .pdf document containing specifications for the toughbook 30, which has a 500 nit display on non-touchscreen models and a 1000 nit display on touchscreen models
