Kernel probs

Lo all,

Well, I have been trying my best to get into linux... (so far I have had a lot of frustration)... I have currently went back to red hat (4th install) and well, the default kernel for a start is useless

So, for the past day and a half, I have been trying to compile a "working" one.
First of all, followed laclasse's guide, it's great, very informative... and helped me alot. The only problem I have is I really want apci to throttle my cpu.. so I tired it several times, but everytime I try to compile with the module installed, I get a compile error... if I leave it out... no bother... but I want it

So, I decided I would try the beta 2.564.. it comes with apci, doesn't have to be patched and a lot of other cool stuff to + a very informative GUI... after a few compile errors (removing the offending modules... they were redundant anyway, I just overlooked them) I got a fully compiled kernel and installed it... rebooted... and then selected the new kernel in grub...

I believe it gets to decompressing kernel........ and once it has, says it is begining to load... but it just hangs there... the hard drive does show a bit of activity, but it stops after a bit and restarts after about 30secs...

So... right now I am tearing my hair out. I really want to compile a kernel made specifically for a Sager... but I am having no luck...

Any help, pointers etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I know the possible errors (and the fact I have failed to find the kernel error log) are well, infinite... but any tips, or things you need to help me I would be glad to supply.

Cheers again

NeoCore....

First of all :

- What compiler do you use on RH ? gcc -v in a terminal will tell you.

Then i would not recommend 2.5.X branch devel kernel, for a simple reason. Devel. Means it has more chance to break than run. As well the video/display drivers will not work.

Did ya use the acpi as modules or as compile In ( yes or M ). Please provide my with this info as well as, if possible your kernel configuration file.

Last idea, make sure you are COMPLETELY leaving OUT APM as advance power management in your config. Let me know.

Hey again,

I lost the config file, in one of my installs, so I am going to try again tonight... if I have any probs Ill post the information you asked for.

Would you recommend compiling apci in, or as a module... i have always left out APM

Thanks again for the info

btw, I may be wrong, but I can remembver enabling radeon support at one point in the 2.5 config. Would that support the display?

radeon DRM module

Umm, i doubt ya 2.5.X will boot, but if it is, the radeon may work, all depends on wich version of it you have. 1.7.0 DRM radeon kernel is the minimum to avoid a version mismatch of the drm libs of X 4.3.0.

Good luck, let us know how you go.
