Questions for 8800GTX SLI Owners

I know a few of you have 8800GTX SLI setups right now. What kind of temps do those cards hit under a heavy load such as Crysis? Are any of you overclocking them yet? How many fans does the M1730 have, and how loud are they on high speed? Thanks in advance.

You thinkin bout getin the 1730 TT?
Well, hopefully my M1710 (which I'm PISSED died) will be replaced with an M1730 with 8800M's. If not, believe me, the war will be on... If/when I get my replacement, which will likely be an M1730, I'll do some testing for ya, no problem.

My cards are supposed to ship 2/13 and when I get them I will post more info about it if anyone hasnt by then.

Yeah, I think the 1730 is really nice. Problem is that the least expensive setup with 8800 SLI is $4K. So it's gonna be awhile. I had no idea that the current benchmarks were only announcements and not from actual persons. Here is what I'm referring to: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread211727.html.

Yea TTI would definitely wait, I personally like to wait for the revisions so they can get the bugs worked out and of course the price drop but god knows how long that will take.

What about the Sager's with a single GTX or even a Gateway's 8800GTS 512MB for I think $1299

The thought has most definitely crossed my mind Ghaz, but when I do it I'm gonna go big. My next setup will have to have RAID 0 and SLI.

I did my income taxes and now I am just waiting for the money. I plan to get 400GB raid, 4GB and 4965. Hopefully my 8800SLI will be here then. I may even get a penryn.

Hey McFly, what is a penryn? I've seen the term a few times.

It's Intels new 45nm processors, the 9000 series models.

here is a link to a good review of the penryn and how much battery life you gain over merom.

Well since were in the area of 8800GTX's and since were talking about desktop replacements will it really matter? Besides requiring less power to run (thats just a guess)

Yeah, I have heard from too many M1730 owners that the damn thing hardly functions on battery power. You'd almost need a separate laptop for battery-less travel and such.

What i have heard in the near future in say SLI systems they have have basically 3 video cards.

2X SLI cards

1X integrated card (something like an INtel X3100 or 945)

When you unplug the AC adapter the SLI shuts off and the integrated card kicks in which would save power. Vice versa when you plug it back in the integrated shuts off and the SLI is re-enabled.

Even when I'm on the road I have a DC/AC inverter to run my laptop, so I'm definitely not paying extra for that shit. But if it's free, that's cool.

What kind of price drop do you think there will be, and how much, Ghaz? I haven't been dealing with Dell for very long. You have to admit that $4K is pretty good for 8800GTX SLI and an X7900 OC'able processor. At least in the laptop world...

Id imagine Dell would keep the same price for a bit to see how they are selling and what components people are choosing. I think the integrated feature would be standard, I dont think it would be something extra you pay for.

The 1730 is still a new laptop, I would listen to the cons rather than the pros of the laptop to see if any commonality issues arise from this particular model. (IE- overheating or some kind of hardware failure)

And actually the Alienware M9750 is actually really more appealing, sure its older hardware but since the release of the new 88 series the 79**SLI config is a bit cheaper. I think now the base starting price is $1,699.99 and you can give it a 2.33 C2D proc and SLI 7950GTX.

If i didnt already have my Dell and if alienware would just lower their prices a bit since they are on the expensive side, I would consider doing business with them

If gateway would release a decent laptop with decent building materials (usually ahve cheap plastic) I would look into them also. And ive talked to their technicians quite a bit and Im really happy to say that Gateway still has their CS in the US rather than outscoring to India and their techs are also quite experienced so that helps knowing if sometihng goes wrong and Im at a loss how to fix it, they can usually be pretty helpful.
