Questions for 8800GTX SLI Owners - Page 2

That's so weird that you mention that Ghaz...I was on the Alienware website today configuring a laptop. That 7950GTX SLI is appealing, but it can't stand up to 8800GTX SLI. I would be afraid to blow all the money and then end up craving more. What are your thoughts?

Well for 4K I would just say go with a custom built desktop but I know I know its a desktop.

I personally wont be getting new PC hardware for at least another 4 years. If your really hot to pull the trigger, I would just try and wait a few months and see what happens to price and if any common issues arise.

Its really hard to put my finger on a definite answer because me and you may have different uses for our laptops.

I dont care what anyone says, the M1730 really is a tiny desktop. Get maybe an hour on battery and you cant play games on it unless its plugged in. I really do love this laptop.

Well, no, I'm not buying anytime soon. I know I could build an extremely future-proof desktop for half of that...I need to be portable though. It will be awhile before my E1705 needs to be replaced, as in games won't run smoothly at native res on it anymore. I'm hoping it will be awhile before all games are as hungry as Crysis. Even then there's still the option of lowering resolutions and GFX settings.

@TurbodTalon, you can get an 8800 1730 on this auction for $3300 or maybe less with best offer. A similar config costs $3600 on Dell's site, but the ebay one has a 200gb 7.2 drive that isn't available on the 1730 site right now for some reason. The auction says there's only a 1 year warranty, so it may not be what you want if you're after that. There's also no x7900, but you could sell the T7700 for $250 and pick up a x7900 for $500 on ebay. I thought about pulling the trigger, but I decided to upgrade my 1705 to hold out until next summer instead.

I'm in the same dilemma and ended up going for a 7950GTX in the 9400. This will play almost all current games with one noticeable exception - but the one laptop that has so far impressed me was the 15xx from alienware, which gets 10k in 3Dmark 06 in a 15inch form factor.

I just can't justify the $$$ for the 1730 - i know I want one but the wife also wants a new bathroom - guess who wins this war!!!!!!!!!!!

Man a sweet laptop or an expensive toilet???? How can you lose this war.

@Altoid: I'm not ready to buy yet, but the one place I'm willing to lower my standards is the CPU. Especially after upgrading the T7200 to the T7600 and seeing no improvement in gaming whatsoever.

@Philby: Yeah, the 15xx is a killer. But if you configure one with all of the goodies that an M1730 has, it's pushing $3,700 with no SLI.

You must be single McFly. You will one day learn, as we have, to lose these wars gracefully.

@Mcfly: Sorry bout that, spoke too soon. Your significant other must be extremely generous. Or you guys make a ton of money. $4K is a big deal around our neck of the woods. I'm in the military, so it's needless to say I don't make a ton of money.

I'm 26 and have been married for seven years, no kids. Even though my wife is one of the greatest women I've ever met, there's still some level of compromise. Especially when it comes down to asking for a $4K+ laptop.

How about you Ghaz?

Then you should be able to get it through the employee purchase program and save some dough.

Or you could quit being a AF REMF and get deployed. Then you would have plenty of money.

Oh dont get me wrong, 4K is way more then I would ever have to buy a laptop. I was just teasing him about the bathroom remodel or laptop. I bet if I had a house I would do the bathroom remodel also. The only reason I have my M1730 is cause I bought the 2yr CC when I got my E1705 about two years ago.

Playing games (hence the m1730)

I have a 8700GTS SLI setup (i.e. old 1730)...how do I pick up the new 8800SLI part? Has anyone had success ordering an upgrade? TIA.
Well i haven't tested any of the above. only played 2142 so far on it. not sure the drivers are great. still can't set 8x AA in the game for some reason.
Will be installing CoD4 soon. and will also test Crysis
Going to install L8KFangui, although will that give me GPU temps?

Well us poor chaps (I'm older than most here grew up with a Commodore 64 & Amstrad CPC464 - then went to an amiga 500 now those were the good old days!!!) I'm in a strange situation, have two houses (NZ & Sydney) therefore two mortgages (and a third section deposit paid for in Queenstown) so asset rich cash poor!!!! - with remodelling and the wife wanting a spa or pool and me wanting a Ducati and XPS1730 the two just do not line up - unfortunately for me I lose!!!!!!

So I'll stick to the 9400 and my 3 games (getting slaughted in BF2142 is a common thing for me!!!) and just getting away with what I can on the credit card - For me I enjoy technology, this is my first computer after the Amiga 500 so it's been a while, every other laptop was purely a work - you know integrated graphics and 15 inch form factor so all I ever played was excel & word with the occasional game of power point.

So while I consider a 4K laptop expensive I also don't consider it needed right now - My 9400 will play almost every game out there with high res at good frame rates particularly as I have uped it to a 7950GTX card.

But I have to admit - the 8800 cards are a sexy beast and if I could ever manage to manipulate my way there I'd be in with a grin!!!!
