5793 - Fans act crazy in XP64

I am running XP64 on my 5793. The fans seem to be totally erratic, they start up and slow down and run full bore and get quiet seemingly at random. I don't even have to be doing anything, just sitting at the desktop, and they still bounce around the speed spectrum.

Is this normal? I know XP64 isn't officially supported by pretty much anyone, but it's so insanely fast, I luv it so much. It has normal power management control stuff for laptops so I don't really expect it to cause the laptop to do anything weird.

On a semi-related note, how do these laptops handle running OS's that don't have any power management, or broken power management? I tinker with different OS's from time to time, and not all of them are necessarily designed to run on laptops. I don't want to damage anything.

I think that the fans are controlled by firmware based on temp sensors. If you search around you'll see there was a firmware released around 1/21 that has Fn + 1 (Full fan speed), Fn + 3 (Medium fan speed) settings. Newer notebooks (from that day onward I'd guess) have it pre-installed.

I am amazed how loud that one fan gets. I've had to move to only using good either around or in ear headphones. If there was a $50 fan replacement kit (fan alone should retail under $10) from Sager that would upgrade that fan to a quieter part, I'd buy it in a second.
