I'm trying to connect my Dell Vostro 1500 up to my Yamaha Digital Grand piano via the USB MIDI interface. I installed the drivers and everything, as per the instruction manual, and my laptop seems to recognize the keyboard.
When I go into the device manager, "Yamaha USB MIDI device" is listed under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers or whatever.
If I go into the Yamaha control panel menu, it shows my piano. If I click the "Play All Notes" button, the piano emits an extremely loud, horrid noise indicating that it recieved the output from my computer.
However, my piano can't seem to be selected for Midi In/Out in any MIDI program. I've tried it in the Yamaha Digital Music Notebook, SONAR 6, Finale, etc. Also, I can't select it for MIDI device in the Audio control panel. I can only select the Microsoft SW Synth midi device.
I'm pretty sure I've followed the installation correctly and everything. I know that my piano is connected to my laptop correctly.
I'm thinking the problem is with my SigmaTel sound card? I've already had problems with it in the past (Can't hear Line In, no Stereo Mix, etc.), so I'm thinking that Dell really made a bad choice with it.
How much do external (USB?) sound cards cost? Would they remedy the issue, and would I need one that I can connect my piano into directly? Moving my piano into my room where my desktop is isn't really an option.
Has anyone been able to get a laptop with SigmaTel audio to accept input/output from a MIDI instrument?
