A Couple of Questions About Sager

i am going to college soon and am looking to buy a new notebook. i like sager because its cheap and powerful. however i have some questions about it.

1) i plan on getting the sager np2092. would this be too big or heavy to use in college?

2) i want to get the 4GB ram and the intel turbo memory. it says that i need vista. however i want to have XP. is it possible to have XP running and still have those two items installed (like not to use in XP, but to have it in the laptop just in case i wish to upgrade to vista)

3) how sturdy are sager notebooks?

4) how long does the 9 cell battery last?

5) if theres anything else i need to know please tell me

thanks

You will have to disable the turbo memory in Bios if you use XP, so why buy it.

The best you will be able to access is close to 3 gig's with XP unless you get the 64 bit version of XP.

To answer your questions about the weight, it shouldn't be too heavy as it only weighs 7lbs. My sager 5760 weighs int the neighborhood of 10lbs I think, and I carry it around to every class along with all my books.

There isn't much point in having over 3GB of ram in XP, nor ordering turbo memory. Save yourself some money or just dive into Vista 64. Vista 64 pre-SP1 actually has fine driver support now as long as you don't need to plug in some no-name brand peripheral from 5 years ago. This wasn't the case a year ago, but with current hardware, Vista 64 is really great.

Oh I have a 5792/3, and it is fairly sturdy.

i want to have the turbo and the 4 gigs of memory because i have alot of engineering programs that dont work on vista. so i want to have XP for now and upgrade when the software becomes compatable.

i just want to make sure: if i have turbo memory and 4 gigs of ram, i will still be able to run XP?

also hows the battery life

thanks for all the help

I have no clue about battery life. Of course get a penryn CPU if that is a concern.

Having Turbo Memory will not help battery life as there will likely be some power draw even though you will have it disabled. There's no reason Turbo Memory would make you not be able to run XP you just can't use it. It sounds like you understand that point so worst comes to worst you could just pull it and stick it in an ESD bag until you upgrade.

4GB is a bit more problematic. I had 2gb in my XP MCE PC was 100% stable. Then went to 4gb, crashed multiple times daily. Maybe with XP 64 it would be better, but the XP 64 driver support is bad compared to Vista 64. You should really just double check that your programs don't work in Vista 64. Another option of course is to run Vista 64 and VMWare a Linux/ XP machine.

can i order the laptop with the turbo memory and the 4 gigs and when i get the laptop remove the turbo memory and 2 gigs. and just save them for later? like would it be too much trouble to manually remove the two gigs and turbo memory?
By the looks of everything I've seen on the Sagers so far, removing the Turbo module shouldn't be too hard. Removing memory is always easy. Just be carefull how you store them... definitely get an ESD bag.

thanks. so i suppose the other way around would be easy too? buying the turbo and extra memory later on and installing it

If you buy the 4 gigs and remove one 2 gig chip you will not be running in dual channel memory mode so you will take a memory performance hit. You can leave the turbo memory in you just have to disable it in the bios for XP. Even if you would dual boot you would have to disable the turbo memory every time you booted up XP.

Ugg... I forgot about the dual channel memory thing. Thanks for jumping on that Krassh.

You could order it with 2 gigs (like I may do) and then get what you need to upgrade the memory later 2 (2 2 gig chips). Memory is usually relatively cheap and it is easy to install.

I'd hate to sound ignorant here, but 2gigs v. 4gigs and the Robson module is probably what a $100 savings? What is your total notebook cost going to be without these? How long are you planning on using XP for?

Only reason I ask is that if you are looking for a WinXP notebook, with 2gb of ram, 8600M GT video, I would probably try finding a $700 dell special, save the $300 or so sager purchase price + $100 in the above upgrades, and in 12-18 months, when the cheapo dells come with 4gb + turbo memory, buy a new one and sell your old PC. It might sound dumb, but I bought a Dell Outlet 9300 that I spend $1350 total (including tax shipping, extra AC adapter, new HD, more ram, new video), including lifetime upgrades on, 3 years ago, and just had a local buyer on craigslist offer $600 for it.

I just joined the Sager camp so I probably shouldn't be recommending Dells, but for what it seems you are looking for, buying a laptop now that will get the job done, then again a year from now, that will be MUCH faster and can run Vista with the new engineering apps, may be worth it for you. I may be really off here, but it is at least worth doing due diligence on.

thanks for the responses. yea i realized that if i buy the 4 GB and then take 2 GB out i wont be able to take advantage of the double memory thing. thats why i decided to buy 2GB for now and then upgrade later. i know its easy to upgrade memory. but how about the Memory turbo? is it easy to install?
Robson Turbo memory should be easy to get to. I have mot opened mine up yet but from pictures on Xotic PC's site it looks like it is out in the open like the ram. You can disable the turbo memory in the BIOS so for th $35 why not just get it now and disable until you switch to vista?
