MBP pro upgrade....questions

Thread Starter
I currently have the MBP as in my sig.
I use the MBP for when I travel now.
I'm thinking of totally scrapping my current massive desktop ( C2D E6420/EVGA mobo/ GF7900GT/ 74 GB Raptor hard drives/ 30" Dell LCD) and going totally laptop workstation.
I'd use the MBP in tandem with my Dell 30" LCD. Also I'd use some external USB drive for big storage.
I'm slimming down and going simple this year.

Big questions:
Will the new MBP coming out be a substantial upgrade from my current MBP specs?
Are the newer MBP video cards better than the ATI X1600 I have now?
Or is it basically a lateral upgrade. ie: no whiz -bang -wow notice in performance from what I have now?
I would be using the MBP as a dual boot or Parallels with XP Pro .
I use Architectural Desktop so the XP Pro will be needed.

Assuming that the MBP might be tweaked in the near future and that the recent GPU, the 8600M GT, was an upgrade from the x1600, I'd guess a possible GPU bump might be significant from where you're at now.

I'd say your fine. The next update which many speculate to be happening no later than a few months from now will most likely take advantage of the new smaller C2D CPU (45nm). This will really only effect heat and battery life. People have also speculated that a new update with leopard will also launch on this date.

From my best guess we won't see a significant iteration in the MBP until Jan of 09 and that will allow MBP's to run Quad Core processors and more RAM (8GB) potentially.

Just my 2 cents though.

Considering that the base model of the new MBP will most likely sport the T9300 chip, which is 2.5GHz/6MB cache vs the base now at 2.2GHz/4MB cache you'll definitely see some performance improvements especially in things like video editing which are very CPU intensive.

My guess is that the new model will also likely feature bigger HDs as standard as well as the new multi-touch pad from the Air. Another speculation is that the VRAM is going to be bumped up from 128 to 256 and 256 to 512. And all this will presumably be at the same price point as they are now.

Granted all these things are based on speculations and rumours but they do seem logical and fairly reasonable to expect.

I just bought a MBP ten days ago and have decided to return it and wait for the new model. It's rumoured to be coming out on Tuesday. lol ....don't ask which Tuesday though.

T9300 is unlikely. all cases point to T8300- the 2.4GHz with 3MB L2. pricepoints are equivalent with the current T7500 2.2GHz 4MB and lenovo, dell offer these as equivalent upgrades, while T9300 is not a free upgrade. just don't get your hopes up. vram upgrade is possible but no definitive word atm. overall, not a significant upgrade unless things like multitouch trackpad are important to you.

Your guess is as good as mine but I still think the base will be 9300. Every single Penryn-related rumour (granted it's just rumours at this point) on the MBPs has mentioned the 9300 and not once was the 8300 mentioned. Also, the Intel bulk pricing difference between the 8300 and 9300 is $65. Given that historically apple has put premium processors in their mbp line, I doubt they're going after the $65 saving while losing the PR advantage that comes with the 9300 (faster CPU with double the cache).

I thought multi-touch would be a gimmick but after reading a few user reviews of the Air, it sounds promising.

Of course all this is speculation and we'll find out for sure very soon I hope.

I have four days left on my return period for my MBP and I think I'm going to keep this one unless apple announces the refresh within the next four days and it totally blows away the current models.

I'm just loving this machine a lot; everything about it, the screen, keyboard, performance, noise, heat etc...it's just perfect. Who knows if I'll luck out with one like this again with the new model.
