Ah hah! Try using the FN key and the keypad up and down arrows... those are the proper brightness adjustments. the other one (F8) is for quick setting highest or lowest brightness.

That should solve that problem.

I tried my LG screen from my E1705 and it worked fine in my 6831, but the gateway screen would not work in my Dell.

No video, seemed the backlight was working.

Been wondering if its a Video card BIOS issue with the newer Gateway screens.

So along with the T8300 I am gonig to get, I will purchase another WUXGA screen for the laptop

1. I wasn't able to get any pictures last night, I will do so as soon as I can. Busy here with class and work.

2. Thank you, seems I was using the wrong key combination.

3. The GW screen does work in my M1710 but it looks like crap. Going to grab a WUXGA off of Ebay I guess and then sell the M1710. It has CC until 2010 sometime.

I picked up a WUXGA screen for $ 115.00 + Shipping New In the Box.

I also ordered the T8300 CPU $ 249.00 should be here today or Monday

When I did try swapping my Dell WUXGA screen the only thing I had to do was remve the inverter (3 screws) and then the bracket that held the inverter (2 screws). Other than that no problems at all.

I left the orignal inverter from the gateway, and it worked fine with the dell screen.

The Gateway inverter was larger than Dells, and i did not think would mount properly in my dell.

last...The gateway screen did not have the same hole pattern on the bottom, thus I could not mount the original dell inverter backet to the Gateway screen.

Hey guys I just got my Laptop from Best Buy today and I had a question. The manual says that in order to enable RAID you have to go to the advance section of the bios to the SATA controller section and change the "mode" to RAID and then the gateway splashscreen goes away at the start and then you can press Ctrl+1 to access the RAID controller.

Now my question is I just got my laptop today. I haven't bought my 2nd hard drive yet and under the section they are talking about, I don't see the option to select "RAID" and the splash screen will not go away. Is that because I don't have a second hard drive setup yet? I'm worry I may have a cheaper laptop, can someone confirm that I need a 2nd hard drive plugged into the 2nd SATA controller in order to get the "option" to even access the RAID controller. Sadly when I contacted best buy and I had some tech try to tell me RAID can't perform on a laptop so I just d/c from him (tech chat) and hope I get an answer here.

Just got mine today as well.
I am a fairly decent modder and have built several desktops, but this is first laptop mod.
Couple questions will a t9500 penryn work? Is this the fastest dual core?

Next who has found the fastest response WUXGA LCD?? I found several, but it doest list response times.

Last... this thing drags on Vista for me... not sure why. Can someone please post some links to the XP drivers. I found the Videocard Drivers.

Hope the GPU maybe upgradeable in future.

The same here. I have just installed the PHILIPS LP171WU1 17" WUXGA LCD SCREEN. First I have incorrectlly removed the GW inverter without noticing that the actual video connector is different from the LG`s one. Therefore I had installed back the GW`s one and removed the LG`s one from it`s bracket(1 screw total). From there it was a breeze. 7 levels of brightness and amazing picture comparing to the original screen...all for only $189...

sam As far as XP goes I managed to find everything but the sound drivers, and according to onr post here, Gateway's response was "Don't Hold Your Breath"

It is a 2 Channel IDT High Def Audio device, but everything I have found was for a Vista driver. Seems it very new, and thus no legacy drivers.

So unless someone else makes a driver, looks like we are SOL

I wil be opening mine up shortly to install my 8300 CPU, will take a look around for the GPU then,

I did run an Intel Chipset Utility and it identifeid the mobo as having an intigratred GPU ???

Try installing the drive, I believe then the advanced menu will be available.

I ordered another wd250gb scorpio today for $99 from Tigerdirect. After reading some of the reviews this combination in Raid 0 should do nicely.
Still waiting for any reviews on wether a t9500 will fit in this thing.
I hope the 8800M GTS is not built into the board

Question I got the crappy 5450 CPU and my 6831fx is stock except for a MUCH cleaner re-install of Vista Premium. I tried playing Crysis and got to admit I was dissapointed, the game had me set to medium settings and was not very playable. I am looking for the best ram to upgrade too (ram is the lowest number on the Vista playing experience) and I am still looking for a fast Response time WUXGA lcd any suggestiongs? Anything under 12 ms should be ok i think.
The sound doesnt work with XP, but I ordered a Creative Sound card that should work nicely for about $80.
XP has always been much faster for me, vista just still seems so bloated and wastes more time with all the crappy system pop up, warnings, and eye candy.

Spinitch, awesome thread btw as I got my P-6831FX during the President's Day sale at Best Buy.

Quick question though. Everything is pretty straightforward except the LCD stuff. I'll prob eventually replace my lcd, but was wondering where you got your replacement panel? And I looked up your Samsung part number LTN170WU and I got different results. Some say LTN170WU-L02 and LTN170WU-L03. What are the differences here? I'm trying to find a decent place to buy either a 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 panel that works well with this model. I'm in USA and would like to buy it online.

Thanks
Stephen

I would recommend a CPU upgrade, as that is the weakest thing in this model, I did do a swap from my E1705 with the memory, so now I have 4 Gigs running in true Dual channel mode. but the stock 3 gigs is not that bad really.

Since I already had the memory it was an easy decision.

The T9300 fits in this model for sure, that T9500 should fit, but priced at 600+ dollars not sure it's worth the money

I picked up my T8300 (2.4 Gig CPU) for $ 249.00

Hi,
I`ve recently installed LG LP171WU1... The best place to look for the lcd is EBAY, Craigslist or so because from my experience all retailers I`ve looked up via google, pricegrabber, bizrate were way more expensive. I am talking around $200+ more. Mine was a breeze to install. Only thing I have modified was the inventer. I had to took it off and use the original GW one. The screen cost me $180. I had Dell XPS b4 and couldn`t take the washed out GW screen. Any eyes deserves better .

LuckTR, sounds good. But when I looked that up on Ebay I got lots of diff versions of that. A3, A4, A5 etc. What are the differences between all these?

Is there any problems with installing thermal paste to the northbridge?

I took off the heat pipe to install my t9300 and the pad on the northbridge ripped so now its not sitting clean over the chip.

or do I have to find another pad for the northbridge?

I assumed you meant to type $600+

I found some for $440 plus s/h of $10
Would this work? would it be a big step up from the t9300 below?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-T9500-Penr...QQcmdZViewItem

Will admit not all up on the laptop cores and such... but this seems like a fairly decent deal if it would work.

Newegg has the T9300 for $328

I think you will need a pad, the spacing could be the problem, if there is too large a gap it will not cool properly
