I read somewhere that the 1G and 2G mem chips that come stock in this are in fact running in dual channel mode. What util would I use to verify this?
That SATA controller is limited to SATA 150 so you wouldn't be able to extract the hard drive's full potential but I would guess the speed difference would be negligible anyways if you are going to run RAID. You run CPU-Z to verify you are not running in dual channel mode.

thats what I thought, but my new drives took me from 5.1 to 5.9 in the windows scores.

has anyone managed to get the WEI score for memory up above 5.0 and if so how?

Your CPU should have brought up memory score. My T8300 got 5.3 and brought my memory score up from 4.8 to 5.1 after upgrading to T8300 from a T7500. Also 2x2gb brought up the score.

My P-171S FX scored a 4.8 out of the box.

Hey I had a question about this laptop? First of all I just noticed Best Buy dropped the price 100.00 so it just made me pick it up on the spot. Does anyone know if by upgrading the processor, the current heatsink/cooling system will be able to handle it? I wanted to upgrade to a 2.4 core and just curious if all the models (from the 6831 to the 171S/FX/XL uses the same internal heatsink in the picture? So when you upgraded your core you didn't have to replace anything but the core (and fresh layer of thermal paste obviously?). I ask because then its good to know that the current heatsink is rated up to the 2.8 that gateway offers?

The heatsink is fairly good so it should adequately cool any CPU. The new penryn CPUs are 45nm so they will actually be a little cooler than the stock CPU.

Just off the topic...Have bought Gateway P6831, currently have the WUXGA screen shipped from Ebay and getting all the reccomended updates soon(tnx for tips Spinitch, GoHack etc).
There is still this one thing on my mind. I was wondering about it b4 I bought my Gateway. I will be looking inside as soon as I receive my T9300 but until that happens, ANYBODY ACTUALLY PULLED OUT THE GPU? POSSIBLE TO SWAP IT FOR GTX (96 STREAM PROC VERSUS 64 FOR GTS)? Tnx for some if any replys. Still love the performance for the $$.

Hey everyone.

Just picked up my 6831 yesterday. I have on order a T9300 which I should have in 2 days.

I just wanted to give everyone a little experience story here. I am a risk taker so as soon as I got it home I pulled the WUXGA out of my M1710 and prepared for a swap.(going to order a new one from Ebay a little later).

I found out you will need to unscrew the side rails from the GW LCD because this is what keeps it secured inside the housing.

On the Dell LCD I had to drill out the rivets holding the top 2 brackets and also the rivets holding the lower inverter bracket. Once I got those 3 brackets off the LCD frame I was able to take the GW siderails and screwm them onto the Dell LCD. Once the side rails were on, it installed in the 6831 like a charm.

My one problem is that I couldn't swap inverters so does anyone know if that will be a problem? I am using the GW inverter with the Dell LCD. The only difference I noticed is that with the GW LCD I had 3 different stages of brightness and now with the Dell LCD installed, I only have 2.

The lower bracket that was on the Dell LCD I secured to the GW LCD using industrial strength electrical tape. It works but that screen is crap and it only needs to stay this way until I get the one from Ebay.

So, I am only left wondering about the inverter, anyone else have any experience with this? I know the drilling out parts sounds scary but it was actually pretty easy and you only drilled for a few seconds(just enough to pop the rivets).

Only three? I have seven.

I just used a very fine screwdriver to remove the bracket and putting a little pressure on it to get it at an angle. I guess drilling is optional.

I also didn't have any problems with the inverter. If I counted correctly I have 8 brightness levels.
Well, if I am using the correct keys FN + F8(?) I have three levels but only 2 of them are actually a different brightness.

Strange...

What model number is your LCD screen?
The one in there now is a Dell, LG/Phillips.....not sure the model number. I won't be able to get that for you until tonigt.

I think someone else in here did a WUXGA swap with a LG. It might be incompatibility issue with that model LCD and the Gateway inverter that's only giving you those brightness levels.

I did manage to put my stock WXGA screen on a Dell E1705 and it was not able to get to the brightest level. It went from dark, less dark, less dark, back to more dark, so I couldn't get it to go to the brightest level. The stock LCD from the P-6831FX is a Samsung so there definitely was a compatibility issue with that LCD and the Dell's inverter.

As long as you are able to get the brightest level, you should be okay.
