Hi guys,

nice to meet you all.

I have a major problem here, the DVD-ROM in my laptop is detected by the device manager and the bios, but it does'nt read any disk i put in it.

burnt or retail made.

i need to reformat as i really need my DVD-ROM for work.

when i try to reformat the disk isnt read before the windows boot screen, i've set the dvd drive as the first device in the boot order as well.

Please could someone help me, it will be really appriciated.

Kind regards and thanks in advance,

jason

Sounds like a dead DVD unit.
That or check your Device Manager Settings.
Make sure you have the correct drivers.
Which type of laptops and Burner do you have?

hi rob,

thanks for your quick reply.

the drivers used were from windows, when i slot the DVD-ROM drive in, it installs the drivers itself.

i have a ASUS M2C and the DVD-ROM is a OEM one made by tosihba samsung.

if i could give you more details that could help me find a solution please dont hesistate to suggest.

thanks for your reply

I've had a similar problem before and I didn't know what to do. I did, however, get it to work by sticking in a PCMCIA cd drive into my laptop and somehow the DVD inside the laptop (not the PCMCIA) started working again. You might give that a shot.

Well I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy one (only if you had to), but try and find maybe a coworker or a friend that might have one. If you have to buy it, they go around $15-20 online. It worked for me, but it might now work for you. My guess is of why it worked was because my laptop loaded the driver from the external drive and somehow it became compatible with the laptops dvd drive. So once that happened, I used the laptops dvd drive to complete the installation of Vista.

see if anything is loose too. Sometimes a screw is not sitting the dvd connector right. That or see if anyone has a spare drive to swap it with.

I've had some luck using a USB External CD drive and using the boot from USB device option in the bios. This may depend on the laptop you have as to whether it will give you the option to boot from USB.
