Problems with my Dell XPS M1210, what should I do?

Thread Starter
I have owned my m1210 since August of 2006. It has worked wonderfully for most of that time. I have upgraded the ram from 1 to 2 gigs and added an internal Verizon EVDO card. I have also upgraded from Windows XP to Vista Ultimate.

About three months ago my e-mail (Outlook, Office 2007) stopped functioning properly. I would get an error saying some file was corrupted. I could not even delete anything as well as send or receive. Some kind of error asking me to run some program I never heard of.

Since then I have been using my Alienware lappy to receive my e-mails. I have been planning on reformatting my m1210, is that the correct action to take? Or should I just restore it to how it was when I purchased it (System Restore). I have been thinking about doing that as well, since I am not that fond of Vista.

I am also having real problems with the m1210 overheating! The only way I can get it to cool down is by using a cooling pad, otherwise it gets so hot it laggs and crashes!

Do I need to clean out the fan and heat sink?

Any tips people would be appreciated, thanks!

Definitely start with blowing out the fan/heatsink.

Heat does all sorts of funky stuff to everything. Rather than reformat, why not remove the entire office suite, then reinstall.

Of course, if you dislike vista, a complete format/reload fixes most issues...

How hot is your laptop getting? Is it still under extended warranty? I agree to try and blow it out first and reinstalling the program. Vista is still buggy so your software problems could be because of vista.

If blowing the laptop doesn't work and you have the extended, call dell. Mine was overheating last year and Dell picked it up on wednesday and had it back to me by friday. They replaced the entire motherboard/heatsink and even slapped a new palm rest on for good measure. I was highly impressed with their service.
