Can this be done? Id like to swap the DVD drive for a Blu-Ray drive from another XPS M1530. I can not find any documentation on the drive swap.

Thanks!

There should be instructions in the user manual that came with the laptop... Its very simple, undo the locking screw and pull it out, put in new optical drive and replace locking screw. In any case, here is online version:

I am talking about m1530. That like is for the Inspiron model.

would the blu-ray drive for the m1530 fit in the 1330?

same drives

so if I were to install it on mine I would just have to load the drivers onto my computer from the dell website?

You don't need drivers for an optical drive, but you'll need software that supports Blu Ray playback.

thanks for the info. I did some searching on another forum, turns out the bluray drive from he 1530 won't fit in the 1330. bummer.

I'm fairly certain that the M1530 and M1330 use the same type of drive, but the mounting hardware is different. All you'd need to do is swap the rails and cable from the original drive to the M1330 drive.

Oh, I forgot to mention, swapping the Optical drive on the M1530 involves removing the LCD assembly as well as the palmrest. Takes me about 35 to 40 minutes to do the job. For someone that doesn't work on laptops all day it could take much longer.

Why did they drop the modular bay design which made it so easy for me to upgrade the dvd writer in my Inspiron 8600?

I'm planning to buy an XPS 1530 soon but do not want to pay the huge premium for a blue ray drive right now when I won't really need it but would have liked the option for an easy upgrade in a year's time when the price has dropped signifcantly.

Because the integrated slot load optical drive makes them much more Mac like. And mind you, any upgrade you do later will HAVE TO BE A SLOT LOAD. There's no way a tray load drive will work in the 1330 or 1530.

based on what i've read on other sites that is not correct. The blueray drive is apparently about half an inch larger on the bottom than the dvd drive is in the M1330 and from what i've read (from a person that actually tried it) it will NOT work at all without major modification. All in all it kinda sucks cause i liked the idea of a blue ray player in my 1330 as a portable HD solution, but i guess we'll all have to wait and see if dell makes one for the 1330 cause the 1530's drive is a definite no go.
