r51 flashing orange batt indicater

just got an ibm r51 given to me from work with no cables. i went out and baught a kengsington universal power adaper and the laptop powers up and works but the batt indicator is flashing orange constantly after an hour of charging and when the power cable is removed the laptop shuts off. do you think the battery is hooped or is this power supply the problem?

My guess is the battery as the laptop is working with the power pack but not the battery. Look at the size of your power adapter and make sure it has enough wattage. It could be a case of it has enough power to run the laptop but not enough power to charge the battery at the same time.

I assume you left the laptop turned off with the charger plugged in? If not try that. If for some reason the battery charges with the laptop off, assume your power supply is too small.


Go into the ThinkVantage utilities and look at the battery health screen. Odds are it'll come right up and tell you the battery is smoked.

That's the bad news. Good news is a brand new R51 battery will set you back $150 and give you many years of service.

thanks for the help but i got it figured. turned it off for 8 hours to let it charge and it finally took. 100% charged now thanks.

That sounds like the battery isnt any good. It wont hold any charge. I had same problem with my Thinkpad T30
