just got an ibm r51 given to me from work with no cables. i went out and baught a kengsington universal power adaper and the laptop powers up and works but the batt indicator is flashing orange constantly after an hour of charging and when the power cable is removed the laptop shuts off. do you think the battery is hooped or is this power supply the problem?

I assume you left the laptop turned off with the charger plugged in? If not try that. If for some reason the battery charges with the laptop off, assume your power supply is too small.
Go into the ThinkVantage utilities and look at the battery health screen. Odds are it'll come right up and tell you the battery is smoked.
That's the bad news. Good news is a brand new R51 battery will set you back $150 and give you many years of service.
