BFG 800w PSU randomly shutting down computer

I just upgraded my PSU from a antec 550w to a BFG 800w because I one couldn't overclock, and also because my computer would shut off after playing a game like overlord for only a few min. But now my computer will randomly shut off when I'm surfing the internet, or if it's just sitting there doing nothing. I really don't know what the hell is going on, and I just want my computer to work right finally.

Specs: Athlon64 X2 5200+, Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe, 2Gb OCZ Ram, Dual 8800 GTS, Plextor 716a, 1 Tb of Storage (two 500 gig HDD's), Lian Li Pc-70, BFG 800w PSU.

Check your system temps while your computer is running. I do this by going into the BIOS and hardware monitor, and let the computer sit for awhile (it will naturally run hot within the BIOS). It might be possible that, now that your components are getting more power, they are able to run at optimal performance and the cooling system you currently have in place is not adequate. This is, of course, assuming your old PSU wasn't providing enough power to your computer and that was the only thing keeping everything cool, up until you ran a demanding game. Do you hear more fan noise than before, especially the cpu and gpu fans?

You also might have a bad capacitor or something in your new PSU. Does the psu have a funny smell like something's burning that shouldn't be?

No funny smells, and my computer is water cooled, so the only fans I have other the one on my radiator are the case fans. I was thinking that maybe the PSU is just bad, which would suck cause I spent the time putting it in lol.

I have heard of heat issues even with a watercooled machine...Do you closely monitor your temps?

The only reason I'm not immediately suggesting your new psu is bad is because you had shutdown issues before, albeit less frequently, with your old psu.

I do monitor my temps, and the only time my computer did this with my last PSU was when I started a graphic intensive game, but could stay on for days with no problems. Now it shuts off on booting into windows, or when I'm on the internet, or just randomly.

Temps have to be really high for the power supply to shut down - and it sounds like you had this problem prior to installing the new power supply. I'm thinking you may have a grounding problem.

I would inspect the waterblock backplates first to eliminate them, them move on to wiring.

Funny thing is I put my old PSU in, and it works just like it did before, no random power off's, no powering off when I'm on the internet, or when playing games like WoW. So I'm thinking that I happened across a bad PSU.

Like Buck said; your PSU would have to be pretty damn hot to thermal shut down. At Hardware Secrets, Gabriel had the BFG over 800W and it hit 57°C (of course, it eventually died.. but still. Your PC is NOT 57°C inside.)

The unit is rated to run at it's full potential of 800W continuously at temperatures as high as 40°C.

I'd trust your gut... it's probably a bad unit. You're welcome to email me at jgerow at bfgtech.com or call up support at 866-BFG-FIXX for an RMA replacement.

I just re-read your specs. Shoulda caught the dual GTS setup before...sorry.

If it's not grounding, replace.

Ok, so I got a new PSU after RMAing the bad one, and now I don't have any problems. Amazing how a bad unit can drive you crazy.
