Windows 98' on the 8790?

Thread Starter
It seems as though my move from my Sager NP8550 to the NP8790-s is not going to be as easy as I hoped, namely M$ operating systems. Some of the aplications I used under Windows 98 on the 8550 will not run under XP Pro. Has anyone had luck installing Windows 98 on the 8790? I have absolute need of these softwares and would try anything to get Windows 98 installed. Also I did buy a copy of Partition Magic and tried to install Win98 from their instructions however after the install during the first boot when it says "buliding a driver database" blue screen and hang-death.

Please help

I think the probem is he did, and now his apps don't work.

That said, Windows 98 probably won't even run on an 8790. The driver support's just not there for a lot of the hardware.

What software are you having trouble with?

Did you try running the program in "Compatability mode"?

Make a short cut for the application.

Then rightclick on the short cut --> properties --> compatability tab ---- check compatability box and then the options.

It's worth a try...

I tried loading Win98 on my 8790 with the same blue screen of death. You may be able to install Win98 Second Edition but I'd recommend upgrading to XP.

I would go with the VMWare option. I have a couple of Linux installations running in VMWare and it works great and it isolates you from driver issues so I am sure Win98 would work OK in there.

I agree with vegas, VMWare is your best bet. Install Windows XP on the lappy and then buy VMWare, and install Windows 98 within VMWare.

Using VMWare, I've run Windows98, Windows 2000, Red Hat Linux 9, and Debian Linux 3.

Drivers don't matter, and your software will run. Plus, if you need to transfer files between the two operating systems, you can, because they'll be "networked" together.

Okay, someone correct me if I'm full of "shizzle" on this...

A lot of the compatibility issues deal with the NT kernel, on which NT, 2k, and XP are based, not allowing programs direct access to certain hardwares. A lot of other software used direct hardware calls instead of System calls, and since they don't know how to make System calls, they b0rk on the NT kernel.

I think your best bet is VMWare or VPC.
