Need help with my 1720 please...

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've now had my 1720 for a couple of weeks but I have a few annoying problems which I can't seem to fix. I have Vista 32bit ultimate.

1.) I keep getting nvlddmkm video driver errors. This occurrs atleast twice a day and is completely random. I have a nvidia 8600 GT card. What drivers am I supposed to use. I currently use the drivers from the Dell website.

2.) The trackpad seems rubbish comparted to my old inspiron 9400. Its slow and sometimes just freezes. I have turned the speed up to max, and set it to light touch.

3.) Anyone installed windows server 2008 RTM on a 1720? Can I just use the Vista drivers?

thanks.

1/ Either a bad vid card, but most likely a driver issue. Try different ones from the 'mobileforce' thread here at NBF

2/May be Vista to blame

3/Havent installed it

BTW, the vid driver from Dell I usually avoid like the plague. I get most video drivers from here. I had your same problem with the video card errors but it was Dell's 84.69 driver that was crappy.

Also, try Nvidia.com for the 8600GT drivers, if you want

1. Never seen that issue, but you'd definately want to try out mobileforce or laptopvideo2go. Dell drivers are disgusting, and usually never get updated unless way too many people complain. Average users tend to just "let it go" if you will and never end up complaining no matter how bad the situation gets.

2. Use a mouse maybe? Install synaptics driver if you havent? I've never really experienced anything like that.

3. Why install server 08 on a laptop o.O? Never tried it, and probably never will, but it'll probably be the same as vista with the added loss of just about anything a server wouldn't need, and enhanced security settings you probably wouldnt want on a day to day use pc.

i actually just got one of these yesterday, do a google search for the issue, it seems there are lots of users with all ranges of nvidia cards having this problem with vista. seems like there are no real fixes for it other than waiting for sp1 to come out. if anyone here knows of a fix it would be awesome, i was actually fixing to make a thread about it, but decided to just search and see what came up.
