But penryn is a chip, santa rosa is a platform that can run meroms and penryns.

The Penryn based chips are the successor to the Merom. They are based on the 45 nm and 65 nm manufacturing process, respectively.

The Santa Rosa chipset supports both the Merom and Penryn.

Glancing at the article, I don't think they made that clear.

I forgot to add that I think they were comparing a 2.6 Merom versus a 2.6 Penryn on the Santa Rosa Platform.
