Maybe it's part of the "exclusivity" that comes with owning an Alienware.. you had to suffer through a month or so wait, at times bad customer support and very high costs. In the end you get a good product, but you've gone through a lot besides just paying for the thing.
What people need to understand is Alienware is not a large company. Their products are considered a boutique compared to Dell who buys parts out of the 1000s parts. The wait is the result of having each notebook handmade per spec.

My AW CC has 9 months 0% interest. So as long as I pay it off before the 9 months i dont pay a thing. Bought 3 machines on that CC.

It's kind of interesting actually, as lesser-known and smaller boutiques actually get their products out quicker because of lesser demand. AW has a very high demand, possibly the highest demand to size ratio of any computer company.

The problem is that in supply & demand, they haven't noticeably improved their ability to supply more products while the demand has risen.

If you ask someone to name a boutique company, AW is probably the first one named. Sometimes you'll get Voodoo (especially after it's acquisition by HP) and Falcon NW, and almost never will you get places like Hypersonic or any of the other dozens or so boutiques.

Any movie now days that requires computers in use by experts are probably AW.

I've seen them in Live free or die hard and Diary of the Dead recently, and tons and tons of tv shows and movies in the last couple years.

This is true. You will also see such high demand when they announce new models, like they are doing now. How many orders do you think they got on Day 1 of the announcement? Those orders keep building and building in the queue.

People now are too impatient to wait for anything... now people think that you should have everything yesterday which is not the case... things take time... its not like Dell who have basic models already made up and ship them out the next day... if you dont have the patience to wait then find another company I waited two months for my m9750 but I waited because I like the quality and power these laptops have... its like buying a Bentley you have to wait to get it... since its hand made...

But I can go to a Lamborghini dealership and pick one up that day. Now if these laptops had, say, koa wood cases or something, maybe so.

It's basically AW not keeping up with supply and demand in the early stages. About 6 months after launch, they're very quick with orders since the demand has lessened... but the first 6 months after a computer is launched probably sells the large majority of their total sales for a particular model.

Another thing is that when you order through AW, they give you an estimate. When that estimate is overshot by a month (as with JB), something's wrong. Waiting a month for a laptop that only requires installing a few components (which can be done in an hour or less) seems a lot. Yes, they install everything by hand, burn it in and benchmark it then re-wipe it, but still.

That's true. But it doesn't require modifying the chassis at the factory to install options on a laptop. You open the case with a screw driver, insert the hard drive, ram, graphics card, keyboard... and you're done.

The absolute only thing that would be non-trivial is the monitor swap.

Same here.
Just get your interest on something else along the way or not think of your order that much.

So you think I can't wait for my system? Seriously? This is the 3rd time I'm ordering from AW. I waited 3 months for the first system and 2 for the second system.

So you're suggesting I have AW refund the 3 grand I already gave them because I think the wait is long?

If you don't think the wait is long, I think there's something wrong with you. I know the wait is long. I do, however, believe it's worth the wait in this case, because AW is the only manufacturer with the binary GFX system and a 8800 in a 15.4".

My main problem is that I'm in college and my billing address is in another state. If they're more than about a week late with the order, I won't be able to pick up my computer until June.

Hi Koshinn,

The wait as you know is worth it! I gotta ask though, why you didn't have it shipped to a UPS/FedEx 'r' Us kind of place around the corner from where you're presently staying? That way they take delivery and you can pick the package up from them at your convenience.

If purchasing with a credit/debit card make sure the card provider has Alienware authorized on file at the proper limit and that the shipping address is also on file with the card provider along with of course the proper billing address/card holder info...

I'm in school in California, but the shipping address is in Nevada, where I sometimes live. I've asked them a few times and AW only ships to billing address for security reasons. The payment went through a couple of days ago and I got confirmation that AW received it, so it's probably a little late to change my billing address through my credit card anyway.

That sounds like a miscommunication Koshinn. I've never received shipment from Alienware at my billing address.

I was afraid it may be too late for you to change shipping/billing etc., but hoping others may see this as an option in the future.

I've seen so many over the years getting locked into the 'gotta stay home from work/school to receive shipment' thing, just to be disappointed when the shipment wasn't on time. Funny though, after receiving each of my Alienware machines I've alwaze been 'sick' the next day or two (well thats what I told the boss anyway!).

Best possible scenario? Delivery ona Friday...that be your three day Alienware weekend rite there!!!

Congrats again on the machine Koshinn...hope it shows up soon!!!

Cool! I am close to finishing my bachelor's degree (about a year or so) which I plan on finishing after I get my tech schooling done. I plan on getting my commission and then maybe going back active. I did ten years on active duty then got out and just joined back up in the reserves. I love the Travis area. (Presently living in Napa, CA)

Yeah I tried to coordinate the arrival of the m15x with my spring break (which will be in Vegas with my family)... here's to hoping it arrives on time!

mb67 - what is/was your afsc? You probably hear this a lot, but... any advice for a new 2d Lt? I've heard "never start your sentences with 'in my experience...'" a lot.

I was a 4a151 (Medical Materiel Spec) but am now going to be a 2e1x1/2/3/4 Communications Specialist. The reason for the 1/2/3/4 in the code is that at some point very soon the AF is going to combine all of the specialties. I'll be dealing with radio, satellite, cryptographic communications equipment. As for advice, just listen to your NCO's. They know what is really going on, and getting in good with them is the key to a successful career.
