Since I couldn’t find any reviews of the Vostro 1500's i thought I’d go ahead and write one so hear goes
My wife and I decided to use our income taxes to get us both new laptops this year. After ordering a pair of these awesome lappys at midnight Friday morning, a scary ordeal (they were missing form the wish list when i went to move them to the shopping cart) I was content to waiting for the estimated build date of Feb 22 and a estimated Delivery date of Feb 27-29.
Then as i was checking my email Monday I got a email from dell stating my laptops had been shipped. Excitedly i read the email to find more good news. my laptops would be delivered the next day! woot! after scaring the hell out of my kids with my excitement (yes i actually yelled WOOT!) i told my wife who Immediately did the same thing, again scaring the kids but they all got a good laugh when we explained to them why we were so happy
First impressions This thing is Fast. Having never used a dual core computer I was always skeptical as to the speed boost (Never saw the speed boosts that sli boasted) but this is hands down the fastest computer I have ever used. And I picked the lowest speed processor available for this laptop.
The Display: WSXGA with True-life, is gorgeous, I was spoiled by the display on my HP at 1440x900 but this one is just as good as that one even with the lower resolution (1280x800) very bright and sharp, images
Video Card: NVIDIA 8600m GT 256 megs , “The Reason” I picked the lowest end processor in order to get this card ( on a tight budget since we were buying 2) and I figured that the cpu could be updated at a later date since my last laptop had a removable cpu. So far it plays all the games I put on it pretty well and still looks good, WOW gets 59 fps in Shatt and Iron Forge. Hellgate London ran great till I enabled DX10 but that’s to be expected as no game seems to run well with dx10 enabled plus I really don’t see the graphical difference either seems to just be more shadows and shininess on cloth items which just looks odd.
Memory: 2 Gigs came stock Cant argue with that, specially since I opted for the O/S upgrade to Vista home premium. I’m still shocked at the responsiveness you literally click on a folder and its open before you lift your finger off the button
Disk Storage: is perfect for what im using this for I still have a desk top and 2 external hdd’s so I don’t really need more than what it came with and my wife could never fill the 30 gig on her old machine so she’s happy too even showed her how to use the media center to record shows so maybe she will get to fill that space up now.
The battery is advertised as lasting for over 7 hours but I’m guessing that’s based on the settings that they had in the power section management section of the control panel (balanced)
All in all I’m very happy with it but I did ding them for the build quality since the seem on the right side of the lcd isn’t perfect, still not sure if i want to send it back for repair since they might replace it with a refurbished one (I hate the idea of buying new and getting repair with used parts).
