Acer 8204 reboot problem

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
My Acer 8204 has started rebooting on its own. At first, it was only enough to think it was just a fluke. Unfortunately, they seem to be happening more and more often,
and it's rendered my machine completely inoperable.

I looked at the following common issues:
- Driver conflict : Disabled auto-reboot in Windows to get a blue screen. No blue-screen, just an auto-reboot anyway. Points to hardware issues.
- CPU heat : Tested w/ speedfan. CPU and HDD heat are fine at the point where
machine reboots.
- RAM issue : Tried all combinations of 1 SODIMM in each RAM socket (machine has 2 SODIMMs). Reboot happens anyway.
- HDD issue : if chkdsk gets all the way through, no bad sectors found on the drive.

I disabled the quick POST, and saw the following message at POST time, but I have no clue what it means:

Alert Sending Device UDID = 40128086 00050024 00000000 8C1E1036 000000C7 01
Vendor / Device = 80860005
Address = C7 - PSA with PEC Silicon Revision = 2

I've never seen this message before in a decade of putting together machines, and Google hasn't been particularly helpful. Can anybody give me a pointer as to where to start?

Thanks!

Vendor 8086 is Intel, device 0005 is supposedly 82557 chipset builtin 10/100 Ethernet controller, which does not make any sense: 8204 should have Gigabit Ethernet (device 108C).
