most low power / low power usage laptop to put into car?

Hello all. I am having some issues finding out this information with google or the search on the forum. I am looking to put a laptop into my car, and it needs to have a little power usage as possible, to tax my power system in the car as little as possible. I am just going to be using it to connect to my cars computer system and a 7 inch LCD screen to show some virtual gauges.

What would you recommend for the project?

Thank you.

it sounds like you'd be better off just connecting the car's computer system directly to the LCD.

I'm not sure I understood it right. For what you want, isn't a small form factor PC better (may even be fixed inside the car deck/console)? I mean, some have very low power consumption (~ 30W.h), and cost less... but again, I still couldn't get everything you'll need (peripherals) by what you said.

SFF would be too big, even somthing like HP's slim line would be too big from what i understand from the OP

the EEEpc would be best, cheap, and work well with what he wants

I don't think you really understood what I mean by SFF. Definitely nothing like the slimline (a behemoth for a car). I was talking more about this, or this. All customizable to get only what you really need, and the first even has HDMI out (not available yet).

i do see where youre going though

that first link reminds me of a slimline, and honestly, a laptop for the OP would be the best bet, its somthing he can take with him, so if hes in an area prone to theft, he can take the laptop on his person

the eee is so tiny it cant be hard to hold or keep in a bag or somthing, and its cheap, 300 bucks......if he wants to hold music on it, there are so many cheap options for him, that will work with the EEE

thats just my .02

Yes, I know that, I don't really disagree with you (even wondering about the hassle of carrying the notebook). I was just trying to put more choices on the table, that is.

well I was going to suggest the iPhone but to use for looking at gauges, it definitely isnt the choice

sony vaio vgn-s150's are light, big enough screen for you. awesome battery life and can be found on ebay for under 500 in good working condition. Their battery life still impresses the heck out of me.
