Compaq 6710b Beep Issue

Thread Starter
Every now and again there is a loud beep from this laptop (Compaq 6710b) which sounds like it has something to do with the hard drive.

The system does not stop, it hasn't fallen over and there doesn't appear to be any error messages logged.

Is this a common thing with these laptops?

I'm running 2GB of HP RAM and Windows XP SP2

tried using windows "no sound" theme? - in control panel-sound and audio
take a look at event viewer and see if anything was out of the norm, propably just a system warning that could be related to a software issue

it sounds like a hard drive noise. it's stopped doing it for the past few weeks so fingers crossed the last update fixed it. Backing up all my data on a regular basis now just in case the disk drive dies.

Very common... It's the standard laptop where I work, and I and a colleague both have it, just from casually talking about it (I'm not *THE* IT guy here, so I can't say how many others, but it happens!).

I would describe it not quite as a beep as in what we're accustomed to from most computers, sort of a squeal, a low-volume not quite as harsh "fingernail on chalkboard" sort of sound.

I've defragged, etc., it never fully goes away.

I have this same problem with my HP Compaq 6715b. I've had this problem for about 7 months (ever since I had the system board replaced by HP right after getting the laptop). I've had a very difficult time finding any information about this. In fact, this is the first thread I've found that seems to be talking about this problem. (Which is why I'm posting to an old thread.) Lately, the beep or squelching noise has gotten longer. It is always accompanied by some hard drive activity (healthy sounding hard drive ticks). Any ideas what they problem may be? Thanks! T.R.

Backing up your data, disk noises are troublesome signs.

Run chkdsk and see.

I have also encountered this beep followed by some clicking that sounds like hard drive activity. Looks like a disk scan, defrag and complete backup image is in order. I wonder if this is related to the HP 3D DriveGuard that I downloaded and installed from the HP site. My laptop is an HP Compaq 6715b running Windows 7 Professional with the original 120 GB hard drive. The laptop has been in use for 3 years and 5 months. There is no evidence of an issue in any of the event logs.

One way to find out is to remove the utility
