The question is, I have an M1710 (specs in sig).

Since vista has come out, I have installed it three times to give it a chance, and all three times I was upset about how slow it seemed, but my new M1710 came with a license for vista ultimate and I just received the install DVD from Dell and was wondering. As of today, a clean install of vista with ALL updates and some tweaking, would it affect my FPS in games enough to notice? Would it help if I upgraded to 4gb? (3.2gb addressable)

voted XP cuz I cant stand Vista.

Voted Vista just to be contrarian.

And besides, it seems pretty fast to me on my little m1530.
Voted XP because Vista made my XPS/9300 much slower. As of now, XP is still the better choice for performance.

What's been said has all been said.

If you like the eye candy go Vista it's pretty and I like the spinning backgrounds. If you want a 3% increase in speed based on the 3D mark 05 tests I've run go with XP. Yes both tests were running SP1 RC1 vista and SP3 RC1 for XP.

It's best just to upgrade to 3 gig, your mobo won't see the extra ram regardless of the OS (32 & 64)

I am aware of the issue with the memory. but I perfer 4gb to keep dual channel, and to have 3.2 instead of 3.

Can anyone else confirm only 3fps difference in anything but 3dmark 05?

Here is the thread:

also it's 3% not 3fps, I only found this difference which surprised me as I thought it would be more but there you go.

A bit old (from February of last year) bit it compares five setups: Vista clean, Vista Upgrade stripped, Vista Upgrade, XP Stripped, XP. Synthetic and game benchmarks.

Note no SP1 for Vista, which is supposed to increase gaming performance.

EDIT: Damn, philby beat me to the post.

Thanks for the link, that made up my mind to stay with XP.

400-700 points difference in 3dmark 06

OUCH

Ha ha - sorry board at work - the bottom like really is that Vista is slower no if buts or maybes but if the frame rates are running at say 30+ then you won't really "see" the difference unless you can change resolution to the advantage of XP.

Personally I like vista, had really don't have to many issues with it but I use XP more often and have XP running on my two active HDD's with really Vista on the play HDD.

Maybe when I moe to an alienware 15xx I'll do 100% over to the dark side but for me without the advantage of DX10 it's kinda a moot point.

Vista blows, compared to XP.

The only resean I will ever try vista in the future is for the 64 bit OS

My friend had vista installed on his new 1710. He liked the slick GUI and networking, but when he installed XP home, his frames per second in World of Warcraft went from 30-40 to ~70. I was just as surprised as he was.

Personally, I think service pack 3 is going to keep me on XP for a long time. I would install vista on my external drive if I get a free copy through my college or something, but only for the heck of it.

i like vista business on my m1710... no issues with it. yes im sure it doesnt make for the absolute max fps but then again i dont see fps as everything as long as the game is playable with great settings (and they are on it) i dont really need to get insane fps. also at a certain point your eyes cant tell anyway.

Vista.

7 year old OS's doesn't hit my fancy anymore.

I've loved it since the 2nd beta. It's the future...till they release Windows 7, then we'll all complain about how it sucks compaired to Vista.

And the cycle go round.

Voted Vista myself. After getting a system running it that wasn't plagued with other issues, I find that it's perfectly efficient on a good system in the first place, a powerful one. Putting it on an old machine or a weak machine is a no-no I must say.

Well this sucks, I make the poll to try and make up my mind, and there are almost PERFECTLY even results.
Go with vista64 bit, it just works without any fkn around, your laptop will be faster in 64bit and you can address all 4gb of ram

All vista dvds should also have the 64bit version on them

I'll PM you with some information on how to do something, cheers

Pick one, try it. If you don't like it, switch. Either that, or setup a dual-boot scheme of some sort.

In essence, live with each for awhile, and you'll know which one you want to keep.

You're not implying that vista 64-bit itself makes it faster, are you?

I voted vista because it came on my M1330. I have had no real issues with it beyond an update problem that I encountered a few times. I dual boot it on my XPS720 desktop and I use it more that XP there. I am no gamer though.
