I think he is! I have an M1710 so I couldn't use all 4gb anyways...

and If vista didn't make enough compatibility issues, adding in 64bit is just asking for it.

I'm glad my laptop got Vista. It really depends how much RAM & CPU you got. Idle vista uses 557Mb RAM.

He has a 64bit processor and yes its faster than 32bit on a machine that does have one

When running 64-bit apps.
Yes 64bit apps like vista64 lol

Its supposed to be about 10% faster. Here's a recent benchmark

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1354&page=2

and he'd be able to use all that ram

I really like Vista, with a newer hardware it runs fast and stable

No, I meant like, for a stupid example, MS Excel. If he runs the 32-bit version of the software, it will actually run slower on Vista64. Something about having to do some sort of translation from 32-bit to 64-bit.

400-700 points difference in 3dmark 06

3dmark is just a number, nothing more

Hmmm interesting. I figured vista 64 would be slower.

So is how much money you have in your bank, just because something is a number doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

What if your 16 year old daughter tried to tell you that "age is just a number" when she wanted to date a 20 year old guy?
Then the number is 2, the double-barreled shotgun

Here is some more info. Honestly, there's a lot of hysteria over Vista, its very good with new hardware

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1273291

I don't think anyone can have a truly objective opinion unless they have run V64 for a few months, to get over the learning curve/difference

when i started playing with compters (games) it was with XP pro, then when i bought my M170, it came with MCE. it was ok, looked great, but i liked regular XP better, so i re-formatted to regular XP and used the royale theme.

so vista has come out, im still using my M170, i like the look of vista, but my hardware not ready for the change, so another re-format into Windows Xp Pro Sp3 3264 Vista Style, WOW, i love it, fast and smoothe like XP, but appears like vista.

there wasnt an option for XP hybrid.

its a different concept

If you want to compare FPS to other systems try a fraps benchmark.

I voted XP. I did my own tests a while back with XP and Vista and found that games ran MUCH faster (I was able to max them out and it still be playable) in almost every game I played with XP, but could barely play the same games in Vista.

Just my personal experience.

Eventually we'll be forced to use Vista, just as we all was forced to use XP.

That's why I keep Linux on my desktop and deal with whatever OS the manufactures ship with my laptops. Until you can build laptops from the ground up, then I'll just use whatever they give me. If I have a choice, then I'll chose the older software system.

On a side note, I still think Windows 2k Professional is THE best Operating System ever created by Microsoft. Ever.

Windows 2k pro is amazing, insanely stable, very very fast, very powerful (as an administrator you have a lot more control over your computer)

I remember my dads company was an MSDN subscriber and I would always fish through the mail at work every week for discs with new builds and new service packs and such.

Well when it comes to 3dmark it can be deceiving. especially for GPU scores. Since the default res is 1280x1024 you will see not much of a gap say between a 7900GS and 7950GTX. Crank up the res to 1920x1200 and you will see a drastic difference. So I can see at times where the numbers may be arbitrary.

If you have a legit copy of XP Pro or whatever laying around whether from an oem or not... THEN GET VISTA. All windows licenses of any CURRENT retail version of their software allows for you to run whatever legacy version of windows you wish.

Put windows 98se on there for all they care. You just helped out the vista numbers. PLUS+++ if it EVER gets better then you have the original software and drivers for putting vista on your machine to make it new again.

We're doing that with the PCs i'm purchasing this year for work (50 desktops and 10 laptops).
