Hello all,

I just wanted to confirm that the P-6831FX supports this Blu Ray Drive (Optiarc BD rom BC-5500a ATA) Installation is easy, just remove your stock drive/bezel and replace with this drive.

Blu Ray movies look sweet on the FX's LCD

Does the screen need to be upgraded to get the full affect? I have the same one you do. My dvd drive is shot and I need to get a new one anyway.

Well to get the full 1080P resolution i suppose u need the 1920x1200lcd but the stock 1440x900 LCD still looks great IMO with the 720 res.

Cheapest way to get one is on ebay. I personally have the Panasonic UJ-110 drive.

Yes, this upgrade should work for all Gateway FX notebooks I'm curious when Gateway will add the Blue Ray Drive to their FX line since some of us already did the upgrade...

You would need to have anydvd to remove the hdcp requirement since the 9600 isn't hdcp compliant. The only issue would be if the 9600 and the amd 64 cpu would be able to run the movie without lag. Have you tried downloading 1080p movie trailers from apple.com to see if they run lag free?

gotcha - that is a brilliant tip for checking if one's system is blu-ray capable!

SpinItch, u r the man!

Looks like it's a standard 9.5mm slim ATA drive. Only thing you would have to do is to swap over the mounting bracket and the face plate from your stock drive.

Here is the cyberlink test for HD capability but like I said, there are ways to get around it like the HDCP part.

this is the same drive I have on my laptop! The standard 9.5MM Slim ATA drive will work. All you need now is a Cyperlink Blue Ray software playback and your good to go!

Just to update everyone. This Blu Ray Drive also works on the M-6864FX laptop. So in theory this should work on all M Series Gateway's as well. If I have time.. I might right up a upgrade thread for this if there is enough interest.
