S360 GPU rant - Any fix yet?

So, after 2 years having my laptop, I have changed the motherboard once (luckily, under warranty), upgraded the wireless card, added bluetooth, upgraded RAM, HDD, changed the whole top panel due to broken LCD hinge, changed the touchpad due to excessive use, changed the CD ROM twice to reinstall Windows XP -- this thing keeps dying from lack of use...

Anyway, now the motherboard is acting up on me again. It happened before: computer is stalled randomly, freeze for no reason, sometimes it just push windows into 640x480 mode.

I tried to underclock the ATI card way way down (166mhz core x 133mhz mem), it does seem to help a little, but it still freeze from time to time.

Now I've got a new laptop, but it's the sentiment that urges me to fix my S360P. I took a few quotes online, AQSTech seems to have a fix for this problem (they swap ATi 9700 with 9200 for less heat). But it costs $200 + shipping. Getting another motherboard from ebay is an option, but new one costs an arm and a leg, and used one, who knows if they works....

So, have anyone figure out a way to fix this old but great laptop yet? Some way to help the heat from GPU passing down to motherboard...

ps: Just for comparison with a Dell M1330 (3 years later, much more horse power), the S360 is still superior, especially the size. It's still much smaller than the M1330.

Sorry for the huge post, I think this is either a call for help or an obituary for my beloved laptop I managed to have a clean version of windows XP installed on it now, and it still flies, well, aside from those too frequent freezes.

Yeh you've got an old PM CPU in there. Those generate a lot more heat than the current Intel mobile CPUs. Have you tried simply propping it up to increase airflow? Or buying a notebook cooler?

This model has the same issue as the HP DV4000 where a bga chip needs to have a mod done to it. After that is done, the unit will always run like great! I have done this repair hundreds of times as well.
If you do not want to keep the unit, let me know! Id like to buy it

How about offer a fix? How much would you think it will cost? What should I do? Replace the ATi chip?

I'm quite attached to the laptop, so even if I can't fix it, it'll probably hang around for a while.

There are a couple traces under the BGA chip that lift off the board due to flexing and heat. There needs to be some copper wires ran to the balls where the trace lifted and then run the wire to where the trace is coming from. That way if the board is ever flexing again it will not cause any issues since there are wires there connecting the ball to the trace. The chip does not have to be replaced.
