Overclocking with Dell 167.51

I hope this is news.

A guest on laptopvideo2go said over-clocking works on newer 160 series drivers if you flash your video card back to its stock BIOS.

Turns out it works on my 7800 GTX Go. I have the stock BIOS on it with Dell's performance 167.51 drivers installed. I can use ATITool to adjust my clock settings as I please.

The guest on laptopvideo2go implied that this would allow you to over-clock with any of the new drivers that wouldn't let you over-clock when you had an unlocked BIOS flashed to your video card.

Windows drivers and their tricks (yes I know it has nothing to do w/ MS). All this driver level bit interpretation is stupid. That's exactly why I know you can't "decipher" the bits in the BIOS because the driver is what accesses it. Sure you can see what certain bits do with a certain driver, but in the end, the driver is in control. I might quote you/the guest in my thread over at LV2G.

Anyone flashed custom "unlocked" BIOS should flash back to the stock BIOS.

This way, I finally can overclock again.
Yeah, drivers are definitely in control.

Cool.

???
for years everyone here said, that software oc is not possible with the 7900gs
and you MUST unlock the bios via flash first.
now, suddenly, some driver makes oc possible without any bios flash?
that's strange.
is there anyone with the 7900gs who tried oc with this driver using the stock bios (rev0)?

I confirmed it myself with the stock BIOS for my FX 3500M (7950 GTX) with both 169.09 and 174.31 (the latter is under testing to become a new MobileForce driver).

i can oc the 169 one also with the unlocked bios.
but what about the dell stock/performance 167.51 driver?
ftp://ftp1.us.dell.com/video/R176673.EXE
can it be overclocked with the stock bios?
and: is this driver very good?
and: what about the 7900gs? anyone there who tried it?

I personally didn't care for them, the only reason I would think about using it is because the LCD lid turns off, other than that, in all the tests I have done with them, the 169.0x drivers beat them out (performance and visual quality wise) by a healthy margin.

You'll have to try it yourself. The 167.51 yields the best performance on my 7800 GTX Go versus the 150 mobile series, 90 series, and 169 series.

i'd like to try, but i'm a bit lazy to flash back to the stock bios...
i would try, if anyone with a 7900gs could confirm the oc ability with atitool and stock bios.. and the better performance...

so: will the driver DEFINATELY be oc'able by atitool with stock bios with a 7900gs? did anyone try?
and btw: i can't oc the 169.09 one, too.
so i have to take the 169.04 first...
Flash your card back to its stock BIOS, and then try with 169.09. I already confirmed that it works, so I really don't know what you're waiting for...

With the stock BIOS, you'll be able to overclock using newer drivers (169.09 and up). Older drivers (169.04 and below) will NOT be overclockable with the stock BIOS.
what i'm waiting for is not the 169.09 one (169.04 works just ok),
i'm more interested if the 167 one from dell works with stock bios of my card.
Well, then try it.

BTW, 174.31 (now in MobileForce Beta Testing) is a much better performing driver, and it's from Dell.
i finally flashed back to the 790GSNNN.ROM (by juan)
and i can oc with the 169.04!
strange!!!

oh, and where do you have the 174.31 from?
any link to dell?
It's from LaptopVideo2Go. It's an Acer/ASUS/Dell/Lenovo driver (it was intended for GPU's from all of these manufacturers).
thanks, i'll try it when there is a nbf version available.

but as for the flashing:
am i right, that flashing your bios is not necessary at all any more?
(only if you want a 1.24v flash).

You would be correct, unless there is once again a change, and who knows whether or not if there IS a change, that either the Stock or "Unlocked" BIOS'es will work.

But for right now, with post-169.04 drivers (meaning 169.09 and newer) the Stock BIOS allows overclocking.

maybe dell recognized that they have more problems with people making bad flashes than with people frying their cards so they gave up the locking...

however, as i said before, i can also oc the 169.04 with the stock bios
(the 790GSNNN.ROM is the stock bios, right?)
