It seems like this info would be really easy to find, but I'm having no luck... are the mobile 8800gts and gtx chips based on the G92 chip, or the older G88 or whatever it was called? I assume it's the older one, but just want to get my facts straight.

It's actually up on the NVIDIA site, but these are more or less G92 variants with less stream processors/ lower clocks versus the G92 GT/S

I looked on every page I could find on the nvidia site... lol.

So they're kinda halfway in between then? Performance-wise at least?

Today NVIDIA is finally unveiling the rumored and much anticipated GeForce 8800M series of mobile graphics cards. The 8800M is powered by the new G92M GPU which is built on a 65nm manufacturing process and as its name suggests, it shares a lineage with the desktop-bound G92 GPU announced three weeks ago. The 8800M series will come in two favors, a GTX and a GTS. The GeForce 8800M series is available immediately and over a dozen manufacturers are announcing new products today and in the coming weeks that will support the new chips.
