It will support a 1GB stick in the free slot (+ the inbuilt 256MB for 1280MB total), despite reported limits. Just make sure you get the compatible SO DIMMs.

Hello,

Please report back if placing a 1G memory dimm into your Inspiron 1000 worked. Our documentation states 512Mb is the max in this system. We, never sold I1000 with more than 512Mb of memory installed. However, "dontknownuthin" could be correct on this and I would be very interest to knowing what you did.

Thanks,

Seemed like my 1000 was on its last legs so i took a 512 stick from wifes 1100 and placed in dimm slot 2.
Upon post hit f2 to check and see if it even saw the new stick and sure enough it was recognized . Saved and exited.
On restart boot through post right into windows xp pro log on..
Check computers properties and sure enough 702 megs is seen.
It should be noted that i did nothing to the motherboard except update the Bios.
Ill put it though the paces tomorrow and post results.
Looks like a 1 gig stick might work.
