Compaq 6720s power-on password, CMOS?

I bought a Compaq 6720s notebook a couple of days ago. After installing windows, I went to the BIOS and added a 'power-on' password. But now it just won't accept the password. A blue screen appears with an icon in the middle of the screen that looks like a key. No asteriks show up when I type my password and when I hit the return key another 'key' shows up with a cross over it and again asks for the passowrd.

Is there any way to remove this password? I read a few articles on the web suggesting to remove the CMOS battery or change the jumper settings, but where are these two things on Compaq 6720s?? The guys at HP service center are saying that they will charge a few bucks. Is there any way I can do it without losing the warranty? (I bought it two days ago and haven't even used it yet )

Caps Lock, Num Lock, etc.. I have tried everything. Is there any way to 'remove' the password? Where are the CMOS battery or the jumper located on these models??

u can probably (with luck) find the service guide for ur model

my personal 2cents:
. i would not recommend playing with the cmos
. should u choose to do so, make sure that u wrote down EVERY settings pertaining to ur comp before removing the cmos battery, u will be losing more than just the password
. HP support would be ur best bet, write the $ off as part of ur comp expense. Think about the other "expenses" that u will be investing (reading manual, taking comp apart ...)

cheers ...

No luck there. It's been rather an unlucky week.

True. All that will take some time and since I have never opened a laptop I won't take any risks.

Bye bye to the few $ left in my pockets and good day/night to you all. Thanks a lot, qhn!

good luck, and hope that u get ur comp back soon. Side note, write/contact a HP/Compaq rep, explain the situation, play the dumb card - u might get lucky with a one-time free support

cheers ...

Update:
I took the laptop to the place where I had bought it and they said that they would themselves contact the service center and give it back to me in a couple of days. 4 days later I called them and they said that these models have extra security bla bla.. and the board needs to be changed!! It could cost around $400 (it's a new notebook. I have used for no more than 2 hours :-( ). Or if I could wait for 4 more days, they would tell me whether it's possible to remove the security chip without installing a new board or not.

I can't pay another $400 for a budget laptop (I could buy a decent second-hand notebook for $400..lol). So, I would repeat my question:

Is there any way to remove the power-on password on an HP-Compaq 6720s notebook without me having to pay $400? You could PM or email me if it can't be discussed here. Mid-terms have already started and I don't have a computer to help me study.

:-(

buddies it is nort so simple ur are thinking the power on password is getting saved in eprom. you can reset the bios but that will not help. best way to get in touch with hp but if u are the original buyer only

you can swap out the BIOS chip but need a donor board, you can check on eBay for one that has a power issue or surged etc...
