Nearly all Area-51m delayed! Even Sentia delayed!

Was looking at the list of limited availability parts, and on ALienware's site I saw:

Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 3 weeks

Both the Enthusiast and Extreme models use that drive, as does the Extreme Sentia.

Alienware goofed! Running out of a key component for most of your product line with a 3 week wait is inexcusable.

You can still configure it with another drive......

And is three weeks a long time??? I remember when they were shipping all systems, regardless of what it was, in four weeks. There are just being up front, would you rather them not tell you of the delay?

You can choose a 20Gb, 40Gb or 80Gb 5,400rpm hard drive instead, but the majority of Area 51m owners opt for the 60Gb 7,200rpm due to its performance levels and low ms times. There may be a problem located at the Hitachi supplier which is putting back availability times.

Everything will be available again soon, it's just stock, happens to everyone.

I'm sure it is a suply issue with Hitachi. If they were available it wouldnt take three weeks to get them.

I think you misunderstand. I've been waiting more than 3 weeks, and I'm going to be waiting more than another 3 weeks, most likely, before buying. This delay doesn't affect me, which makes me a bit more objective.

Alienware has run out of a crucial component. 3 weeks to replace it is excessive, considering they could buy replacement drives from online retailers for (admittedly a higher cost) online. It's possible that there's a problem with their supplier, in which case it may be time for them to find a new supplier

It is most likely Hitachi's fault with the hold up because right now they are trying to meet the iPod Mini drive demand as they have fallen short...it may or may not have something to do with that.

Yeah, but the iPod Mini doesn't use a 2.5" drive. It's a 1.5" drive, I think, in the iPod Mini. Or maybe the 1.5" drive was the regular iPod.

This is not Alienware's fault. Alienware builds thousands of computers a month, and at times supply doesn't keep up with demand. You're assuming that AW "forgot" to order more drives, and that simply isn't the case.

Alienware uses leading edge hardware that is of limited availability by nature. This is a manufacturing supply issue, not AW being lazy.

I remember a time a while back where a supply ship sank in a major storm off Taiwan, and everyone was upset that it severely limited the availability of a component for a few weeks. Everyone was blaming AW for that, but they don't handle their suppliers shipping or the weather.

A three week wait for AW to be sure they can deliver is not what they want, but it's hardly the end of the world either.

Waiting ain't so bad when you consider I've been waiting since 1987 for a 3.2 gig notebook. Now I have one. and it rawks! Thanks Alienware!

That's a 17 year wait by the way!

The 60gb 7200rpm drive is certainly leading edge, but judging by it's market penetration and how long it's been out (6-12 months?), I'd say that you can't blame it on supply issue of a bleeding-edge part.

Perhaps something like the supply ship happened.
