Replacement Screen into NX6120 - Problems

Hi Guys. Hoping one of you can help me out here.

I've got a Compaq/HP NX6120 (celeron m, 512mb yada yada). It got stood on a while back and the screen got crunched. I've since managed to get my hands on another lcd panel and inverter from another HP of similar age. The new one is the 15" real high def screen that was being used for a while (1280x1024 res).

If i install this new lcd using the NX6120's original inverter board and cable it runs and displays ok, but in a kinda vertical interlace. (every second line down is black, so entire image is quite fuzzy) If i try to use the new lcd's original inverter and cable the laptop refuses to turn on - the green light shows for a second, blinks the mains power light quickly and turns off again.

The inverters arent physically compatible (5pin vs 6pin) so i cant mix and match cables with inverters.

Has anyone here come across this before? Is there a certain type of cable or inverter i need for this laptop to run the new screen?

Thanks very much for any help you can give me.

Hey, na the lcd was running great in the previous laptop when the motherboard died. Running correct display and monitor drivers, will let me run any resolution the screen supports but still the the weird interlacing - only 800x600 is usable, anything higher and you're missing out on too much detail :-/

hook to an external monitor and see if u experience the same issue

cheers ...

It has integrated video correct? The motherboard model number maybe different to run higher resolution video. Like qhn said I would check it with an external monitor then check the motherboard model number or video or something similar. Definitely sound like a hardware issue.

It runs an external display fine, no probs. The motherboard model number? The 2 laptops are completely different, so yea its a different motherboard in the laptop i took the lcd/inverter from. I think its a matter of working out which inverter i should use with this combination of laptop/motherboard and LCD panel. The good laptops original inverter runs the screen, but vertically interlaced, the inverter that was used with the replacement lcd, wont let the laptop power up. Nobody else has tried swapping screens between models before? Thought this would be a pretty common excercise?

I had the exact same thing (as you say, "vertical interlace" is a great way of describing it) when upgrading one of my nx6320's to a UXGA panel. I had to get the LCD cable for the version that came with a SXGA+ screen for it to work properly. Only cost me $7 on eBay. Mine originally had a 1024x768 screen, and the cable for that just wan't up to the job. So maybe yours is the same? The cables for the 6120 and 6320 are the same and are interchangable.

Yea that was my next thing was to suggestion the cable. I have swapped monitors but every time I have I used the cable from the replacement monitor.

hmmmm, when i use the replacement panels inverter board i have to use its cable as well because the inverter plugs are 1 pin different. This is when the laptop refuses to turn on... ahh well, back to the drawing board - cheers for the help anyway guys

No no no, there is no need to break out the drawing board again - I may not have been clear enough in my other post...

All you need to do is get hold of the LCD cable that came with the version of nx6120 that has the SXGA+ screen as standard. It will plug in to your original inverter, and your new screen, exactly the same as you are doing now with your original cable. The only difference being that it will allow the higher res screen to be driven properly!

You can get the cable quite cheaply on eBay, eg. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=250204028102
