Processor Upgradability

I have a Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722, I have upgraded to RAM to $GB of OCZ and plan ot upgrade the HDD to a 200GB 7200rpm drive, but I also wanted while I was at it to possibly upgrade the CPU. It currently has a T7200 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz processor I would like to go to a T7700 or better and power consumption is of no real consern I want power and speed, beside it's plugged in 90% of the time anyway. Also any other upgrade suggestions or ideas are appreciated and welcomed.

just make sure that what u plan to upgrade can be done without bios upgrade (cpu). what with 4gigo ram? planning to go to 64bits OS?

cheers ...

Weird, I thought I posted this answer before. The normal rule of thumb for a processor upgrade is the largest processor offered in that model/series that is supported by the same BIOS. I doubt you will get much difference from a T72 to a T77. The biggest diff in speed will come from upgrading to 3G Ram and a faster HDD. There isnt much sense in going to 4Gs as stated above unless you are considering upgrading to the 64 bit OS

I have a copy of XP pro x64 but I am also considering Vista Ultimate 64bit. I just want to keep this laptop as fast and up to date hardware and software wise as possible but without ging so far as to it being better to just replace to computer. Thats why I'm not considering anything higher than the T7700 I can get it for about 300 and the next step up T7800 I have seen price estimates around 800+ so its out of the question for now.

your system already comes with 2gb ram ...are you currently maxing your ram out that you need 3 or 4 gb to run XP? and why would you want to put Vista on it? your best bang for the buck will be to pull that dog 4200rpm drive...that is your major bottleneck. Leave the rest alone unless you have a real need for a different os.

I the 64bit versionof XPpro also I was thinking of using it when I upgrade my HDD to a 200GB 7200rpm one, but I was also wanting to upgrade the CPU at the same time. The reason I got 4GB of ram was it was a great deal 80 bucks for 4GB of OCZ was cheaper than buying 3GB of the same brand. I use this laptop for gaming and was trying to upgrade to the fastest components without spending so much that a new PC would be cheaper. That why I went with RAM, and planning for the faster HDD along with the possibilty of the T7700 I can do both the HDD and CPU for around 500 so aside from the video card I hopefully won't have to upgrade any more till time to buy a new PC and the I was thinking of going the white book route and loading it with all the things I want. I found a site that offers just the notebook chassis that many custom builders use and putting togther my own. But that is a while off, if I can pull of the upgrades I want to do presently. Sauger mentioned that he had posted on this topic before but I can't find it if you could point me to the thread that would be appreciated.

I'm still wondering...what is the difference between Socket M and Socket P. Both sockets have a T7200 and T7700 but the Socket M processors are all 667Mhz FSB and the Socket P are 800Mhz. I was told by a tech in repair at Toshiba that this my computer is a P socket. But are M & P interchangable if my motherboard will support 800Mhz can I use an M which is 667...I just don't want to irder a processor and tear down my computer to find out that I have the wrong one. By the way thank you all for you help I appreciate it immensely.

Differences between Socket M's and P's I cant help you with. Not a tech. The only thing I can definately say works is going with the largest processor in that model supported by the same BIOS (which I believe you already have). Anything beyond that, I wouldnt know

As I understand it M and P are not pin-to-pin interchangeable.

If you are not sure which one you have and want to confirm it, download and run CPUz. It'll give you pretty much all the info on your cpu (and RAM) that you'll need for your laptop. If it doesn't tell you the exact socket type, it will at least give you the exact model number of the cpu you have in there now. Then with a little help from google (or the intel website) you should be able to figure out the rest.
