"In-game communication" coming to PS3 this summer

In-game XMB has been one of the most requested features for the PS3 since its inception. Currently, gamers are forced to quit games in progress in order to do things like check which friends are online, read a message or play music. While the PS3 supports both voice and text messaging on select games, its availability is sporadic, unlike Xbox 360’s globally accessible dashboard.

That may soon come to an end – if comments of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe managing director Ray Maguire are to be believed. Speaking on the momentum of the console, which just beat the 1 million unit milestone in the UK, Maguire noted that sales of the PlayStation 3 would be bolstered by “in-game communication”, to be implemented via firmware update 2.4 this summer.

However, Sony refused to clarify whether or not the addition of in-game communication means integration with the XMB interface, so it isn’t clear whether the update will be limited to simple voice chat and messaging or whether it will allow you to invite players directly into your games.

Yeah, 360 only has had it for 2-1/2 years now, and its gunna be buggy too on first release, and the better features will prolly only be optional for dev's and wont be seen on new games for at least 6 months......

Yet its still free. Bastards just need to get Home out. Or hell give me the ability to spam Steve when he is folding @ home on his PS3.

Finally, PS3 is looking better and better, now the communtiy needs to make a network thats allows PS3 and 360 players to play against each other kinda like the 360 and PC players can, one can only hope.

Not going to happen. M$ will never let it.

Well M$ never wanted people to mod the XBox's or 360 and they are doing it anyways, whats to stop someone from maintaining servers that both can play on, dedicated. Maybe only for modded systems but that would be a way to get things rolling.

Don't ever see it happening.

Logistically, its an uber simple task to implement 360/ps3 cross platform gaming relatively speaking. I mean reallllll simple.

But it will never happen for 2 reasons.
1) MS is so control centric that EA threatened to walk away from 360 unless they got to control their own servers. MS knew they needed EA, (see Dreamcast) and gave in but controlling their own servers is something EA and only a select few ever get! and thats with a game company. MS will NEVER allow cross console gaming for the lack of control it would introduce for them (ie peeps on PS3 hack in cheats for a multiplatform game ruining the experience for 360 players and theres nothing MS could do about it)

If you dont believe me, ask yourself this, 360 has been out over 2 years, how many 3rd party wireless controllers can you buy at a US brick and Mortar, take that number multiply it by a million, and thats the percentage of a chance MS would ever allow cross console gaming!!!!

2) Sony will never allow it. Sony(Gaming)/Nintendo/Japan for the most part despise MS and its gaming products. They have no interest in inter console cooperation, they would rather ride going solo until they crush MS consoles into dust or the whole division gets a Window Office/Seat(what ever those punishment jobs are called)

If u dont believe me, when it was rumored that MS wanted to buy Nintendo, a deal that nintendo could have billed MS an arm and both legs for and MS would have spent it too,,,, the President of nin remarked that "Bill Gates can kiss my Yellow Ass!!!" and Im pretty sure that sentiment exists at Sony Japan. Look what Just happened to the Ex Sony America gaming president after he criticized Sony Japan lleadership for not getting behind MMO;s....

neva gunna happen

Well I'm sure M$ doesnt want me playing Sonic and Tails on my xbox, or Mario, or anything else, and same thing for the PS3, except the consumer doesnt really give a dam what these three want, we will do what we want. If someone wants to make a system that would allow PS3 and 360 owners to play against each other it will happen. Where there is a will there is a way

Speaking as someone from inside the industry let me tell you it aint gunna happen! MS security in hardware, software, and networking is toooo tight.

I know I prolly cant convince you cuz u dont know what I know, but at least Ill leave this post as an "I told you so" for a couple years down the line when it still hasnt happened.
Ok 'You told me so'

Speaking outside the industry, if someone is determined enough to do it then they will. I am sure as technology leaps forward the 360 and PS3 will be left behind and people will find a way. A few years down the road when Sony and M$ dont give a dam about these consoles I will leave this post as an 'I told you so' when it happens, but not like anyone would care.

Lets see for the last year Ive been working for one of the top5 largest console game developers in the industry as a software engineer working on a multi console/pc online sdk(A single piece of software every game the company makes can use to provide uniformity of code/hardware infrastructure/user interface across all platforms. A 360, PS3 and Wii DevKits resided in my cube, the workstation I used specs on dell at over 10k.

But yeah I dont know shit. go figure
