Custom Linux Laptops

Thread Starter
Found this site, and I must say that the laptops are a _STEAL_. They are custom-made to have hardware compatible with linux, but can of course run Windows flawlessly, and they give you the option of a pre-installed dualboot(Linux/Windows) system before shipping.
http://www.laclinux.com/en/Start

Here are the specs of my lappy all maxed out to my liking, but of course there are more options. I ordered everything except an Operating System, (prefer to install myself).

LUP4IA Pentium 4
Intel P4 3.06 GHz w/ HyperThreading (512K, 533 FSB)
2G PC2100 DDR (2x1024M)
15.0" SXGA+ Display(1400x1050)
Onboard USB 2.0, firewire
Integrated CF reader (SD, MMC, MS)
7.2lb (with CD and HDD) <--Not bad, eh?

80GB HDD
LUP4IA 2x1x8/16x8x24 DVD-R[W]/CD-R[W]
1.44M USB floppy drive
10/100 PCMCIA NIC
802.11b PCMCIA wireless NIC
LUP4IA Li-Ion battery
LUP4IA AC adapter + cable
Laptop Carrying Case
Security device + cable
Auto/Airplane DC adapter
1 year P/L warranty

UPS Overnight( depends on area code of course, but my shipping wasnt much more than 20 bucks)
Unsure if they ship out of the US.

Total: $2,253.00
Is that a steal or what? 2 Gigs of RAM!?
Now there are only 2 models. If you order the model that only supports 1 Gig of RAM, it comes with the Radeon 9600 Pro, opposed to the 9000.
But I will take the RAM...
The only thing I don't like is that it seems the hard drives are not name brand as far as I can tell...But all in all, I think this is a GREAT price for all the features. Any name brand lappy would run 3-5 grand with these specs.
What do you guys think??

BTW, They aren't many lappys, but they have custom Desktop Systems like Dual P4 Xeons, and Dual AMD's...(drool )....
Some of them support up to SIXTEEN GB of RAM...so you know ... if you got 10-12 Grand layin around...make yourself a dream PC.
Windows only recognizes up to 4Gigs of RAM I think?
But Linux will support up to 64 so..Gimme some feedback.

Far too expensive...and nothing that we cant do ourselves for much less...

Nice concept though...they have to think about pricing it right

can't do ourselves?...well I can say I've made my own Desktop, but certainly never had the gonads to make my own lappy... how much do you think you could save making your own? 2200 looks like a steal to me...please elaborate.

I think he was talking about dual-boot Win/Linux option..you can find laptops with those specs or better almost anywhere..

Well I must be missing out...Those specs or better?
For what double that amount? Please send me to a site where you can get a 3.06Mhz processor, 2G of RAM and an 80Gb HDD for this price...BRAND NEW, not Used..
If it is name brand, I will be in _AWE_

As for the dualboot, ( if that's what he was referring to ), I already stated I prefer a blank system to install on my own, Of course anyone can do that themselves...

www.pctorque.com
Better processors (P4 C with 800 MHz FSB), PC3200 400 MHz DDR RAM, 7200 RPM Hard Drive, etc...
I think you will be in awe

Open your eyes to the new world neo J/K

Seriously - much better systems out there for a lot less. And you can download your own free Linux iso from www.linuxiso.org Choose which flavour you want...install it...dual boot with windows...whatever you want the way you want for a lot less money.

Are you serious? You've got to be kidding me.
Am I portraying myself to be that much of a newbie?

How about we stop making these blanket statements, like
"Seriously - much better systems out there for a lot less". LIKE WHAT, cause they are name brand???

And don't just post sites without any specs...

Post up the specs of a laptop for less than the price I've posted, NEW not used. You have all still failed to do so.

I'll repeat myself AGAIN. This price is WITHOUT..REPEAT.. WITHOUT any Operating System installed, as I prefer to install myself.
3.06 w/ HyperThreading 512 / 533 FSB
2G PC2100 DDR
80GB HDD 5400 RPM

$2200+

Until someone can post a NEW laptop, that holds these specs and costs LESS than the above price, I'd appreciate a little positive feedback.

As good as it may look to you, I don't think that's much of a deal. I checked out their site, and along with that 80GB HD and 2GB of RAM, you're also getting a mediocre video card, a slow front-side bus, an unimpressive 15" display, and no-name components.

If you think it's a great deal, go for it. It doesn't look like anything special to me, though.

I'm not saying it's special im saying it's a deal. I know we are all used to the latest and greatest video cards and name brand software. But for these specs, name brand or not, you'll be paying at _least_ 500 more bucks anywhere easy is all I'm saying. It's a deal to me.

Only 512MB of RAM
40GB HDD
No car adapter
No Wireless card

With everything up to the specs of what I ordered, the new price is:
$2631, and that's not mentioning all the other extras I'm getting.
Would I pay 300+ more bucks for the Sager name? sure. But I could also put in a second DVD-R/RW drive, or another 80 GB harddrive for the same price.

Am I the only voice of reason here? Is everyone against me on this? Am I the only one who considers this a deal???

Ok leeach - you asked for it...

First of all the RAM you have in your system that you love is PC2100...we have PC3200
Next we have an 800Mhz Front Side Bus...your 533Mhz is old stale dead news...have fun flaying your extinct dinosaur
Your 3D Card isnt worth two cents...

What exactly are you bragging about??

This is no deal - its a blooming ripoff

I think you should do your own "digging" to understand why we are trying to tell you that the hardware is old, slow and not really worth what they are making you pay. If you dont want to ...thats your problem

You are not paying for the Sager name...this is too funny...sager is probably the least known computer brand...it doesnt have a name thats worth $0.02 so this isnt an issue. Also - among all clevo notebooks, Sager is probably the most economical and has the best support...

Yes you are the only one who considers this a deal. No you are not the voice of reason...

Your refusal to try to understand why so many people are telling you something "different" is really amusing.

Yes, I think you are the only one that considers this a deal. I'm sure everyone here is competent enough to make their own decisions about what to buy and where to buy from.
Another thing to consider - exactly what sort of customer support can you expect from that company?

I'd imagine it will be pretty good considering you will be their only customer

Talk about "Majority Share"

Ooh this is too funny...this thread HAS to be made into a sticky...
While this thread is funny, I don't really want to make it sticky for fear of misleading anyone. I'd rather make it sticky if it had some decent information - for example, an _actual_ deal.

I was simply making an attempt to befriend the community here and make a contribution, not make enemies and try to force people into buying something..lol

Customer support? they have great deals on up to 5 year warranties, and that's about as good as it gets when your'e not buying name brand.
Sorry if I've incited the notion that you must buy this laptop..Still can't beat the price... I ordered one.

gsminardi, You have some valid points, but there is no need to be rude. I don't think I at any time made any snide remarks in your direction. Did I make the passing grade? Do you really want to go there? What do you have a degree in Notebookology? Please, grow up.
You could have easily stated the points you just made Quite earlier in the post, and in a much more mature manner.. thanks for the input.
I know, but you ended up sounding a lot like the other advertisers who float around on this forum. No harsh feelings.

But honestly, I'm not particularly surprised at the price. I have a similar system that's about a year old, and it cost 3000 something back then. So I think that's somewhat reasonable for a price drop in a year's time.
