Custom Linux Laptops - Page 2

Maturity begets maturity...none of your posts anywhere on the forums inspire any confidence that you are a mature individual.

When you get the laptop please post a review and benchmarks...

leeach - just a final comment - it doesnt matter what we think about your choice. If you like it then GREAT!! But dont go around talking about it as if it is the greatest thing since sliced break because it is not. It is in fact VERY poor value...that system is probably worth $1300.00 - $1600.00 at most...

Having 10GB of slow RAM is really no use...

Sorry if I've incited the notion that you must buy this laptop..Still can't beat the price... I ordered one.
...I guess ignorance is bliss...in which case I am very happy for you

$2631, and that's not mentioning all the other extras I'm getting.
Would I pay 300+ more bucks for the Sager name? sure. But I could also put in a second DVD-R/RW drive, or another 80 GB harddrive for the same price.

Am I the only voice of reason here? Is everyone against me on this? Am I the only one who considers this a deal???
I configured a 5690 to be $1989 with:
Superior P4 3.0 GHz with 800 MHz FSB
Superior Ati Radeon 9700 128 MB RAM
80 BG 5400 RPM Hard Drive
1 Gig of superior PC3200 400DDR RAM
Internet Wireless G card
Car Adapter

Are you kidding???

Thread Starter
look , I came in here for some educated criticism, not to be brushed off and called a newb.

Maybe it's not a steal, but YOU sir, are quite childish. Maturity begets Maturity...yep you got me there...

Ok, _everyone_ just chill the hell out. If this degenerates further, I'll be forced to close the thread.

Acer 1712SMI $1853 (from pctorque)
2G memrory $400 (yes, desktop memory is cheaper)
$2253
Same price as your system, except 120G HD, 17" screen, integrated 11g wireless,
and take desktop style ram and hd, so upgrades are cheaper

but if you are completely hooked into laptop-style laptop, a sager 5680 can be worked with those same specs for cheaper, plus a much better video card

RADEON 9000 video card on your system is way dated. 533 FSB is last-year.

gamepc.com does blank as well as a linux setup, plus you can buy them bareboned

pctorque's sager line can be configure without OS

And I bet you will find a lot more people who have detailed experience and documented guides on linux with the sager equipment.

Do you have to use their LAC kernel's or can you download and build one from kernel.org?

I'd look at getting the best hardware deal for your money, then Linux support will be there.

Leeach, let's not get ridiculous here. I was trying point you in the direction of better deals on laptops. Apparently you don't want to believe any of what I'm telling you. Calling you a newb probably isn't using the best word choice..how about ignorant?

gs a little harsh of a rebuke even assuming he is a marketing person for the website he referenced and not really just a mislead consumer. do we have to be downright mean just to make a point?

marketing is not allowed on the forums. The rules are clear.

I dont think he has anything to do with the owners of that website...

My harshness is because he refuses to understand the difference between the stuff on that laptop and the stuff that is available these days...stuck in some sort of time warp. He is talking about the old hardware like its the holy grail of modern computing which is just silly.

I have finally moved this thread to a more appropriate forum. It had no informational value to the Linux Forum besides being a reference to an alternative brand of laptops. It almost deserves to be in the Off Topic section.

I never bothered to read this rule before:

"Brands, pricing, features, and pros and cons posts are appropriate while reseller pricing comparisons, bid war posts, and 'where should I buy?' 'Here's where I bought' posts are not appropriate."

how long has that been a rule? actually it's kind of confusing to me. You can talk about the pros and cons of various brands, pricing, and features. But you can't discuss reseller pricing comparison even though that would that would seem to fall under "pricing"? you can't ask where you should buy even though the answer would usually involve discussion of brands, pricing, features, and pros and cons. You can't discuss where you bought even though you might be likely to mention that in any discussion of brands, pricing, features, and pros and cons. So I guess when you discuss brands, pricing, features, and pros and cons, you just have to avoid any discussion of specific resellers?

I am sure I have seen many posts violating this rule. I probably broke this rule myself after I bought my NP5660. Like dozens of other posts I have seen, I probably posted something say in effect "wohoo I got my 5660!" and probably included details about where I bought and how satisfied I was with the buying experience. I haven't surfed the general forum much lately and probably won't again until it is time to replace my 5660. have people ceased posting the "wohoo I just bought X" type posts?

The rule isn't quite clear, so each post have to be evaluated individually. One cannot use the literal interpretation of that rule, but one can easily figure out the intent of that rule and judge each post according to that "intent". It seems personal, first-hand experiences with resellers and nonchalant descriptions of the reseller is allowed. The rule is meant to keep out marketing and biased reviews due to monetary gains.

and there is some buzz going on with a specific gentoo build geared toward the 680x series. The biggest issue seems to be the broadcom wireless card (which can easily be replaced)

I haven't tried it yet, but I did manage to get knoppix up after disabling acpi anc pcmcia

OK, lets get partially back on track here:

Well, there is a vendor making Sparc Laptops. We have some of the older models at work, used as demo units for clients. They're totally Solaris/SPARC compatible, and overall very nice.

Just be ready to fork over some Serious cash for it. Probably cheaper to get a high-end laptop and stick Solaris x86 on it (which I hope to be doing Real Soon Now).

Now to the other sub-thread (in my rare 2 cents on such subjects):

The actual rule should probably be changed/clarified. It most likely is referring to posters hawking their business wares, which I don't like and is a prime reason I peruse these forums (as the mods don't like it either). I give my opinion on the other note above only due to my personal experience, as Delta said.

I don't read many of those types of posts anyway due to my background with mailing lists - the posts with subjects that pique my interest get first (and likely only) attention. I only ended up here due to another thread I was following.

I also spent lot of time on mailing lists where posts are a privilege (i.e. SunAdmin), and you only post to list twice: The question and a later summary from individuals who responded to you directly. I like this format when using email, I already get 1500 messages a day at work (minimum!).

On the flip side, I could have posted something about my notebook when it came in, though I found the forums after I got the system. But enough has been said about my model (especially Aussie's review, it's almost the users' 'gotchas' guide).
