m15x smart bay questions

Hey all My 18th birthday and high school graduation are coming in June, and my parents have already agreed to getting me a nice laptop for college as a gift. I'm looking at a pretty sweet m15x system, and I'm already very excited lol. I just have a question or two about the smart bay system.

First is that, when youre customizing your system on alienware's site, they have one option for optical drive, and another for smart bay. Since I'm fairly certain that the smart bay is the only bay for optical drives, I'm assuming that the option you choose for "optical drive" is what you get installed in your computer, and the smart bay option would come seperately...so you can swap it in? Am I correct in this assumption?

The second question is how exactly do you go about removing the drive from the bay? In the illustrustration on their site, it shows a "smart bay lock/release" button. To me that looks like it should be the button to eject the optical drive. I guess I'm just asking anyone who has one of these systems how you open the drive vs. how you actually take it out of the chassis. hehe...thanks in advance.

Question 1: if you order multiple smart bay options (battery, optical, hard drive) its a crap shoot as to what will actually be in the bay when it arrives, could be any of the three, the others will be in the box, but since its a smart bay swapping any only takes 3-10 seconds. But I would say that *IF AW had any internal policy, usually the battery would not be shiiped installed in favor of the hdd or optical, as far as what gets precedence between hdd and optical I could make good arguments for either so who knows, but its really pretty unimportant.

Question 2: Dont always believe the pictures, they are usually cpu rendered pics, that said u'll prolly have to wait till an owner replies, but if its anything like previous smartbays that AW offered on old laptops, the button is only a lock and not an eject. you push the button to unlock and the u can grab hold of the bay device and and pull it out. but thats just speculation from past AW experience.

I got the smart bay battery its a great option but I just got off the phone with aw because my 15x was supposed to ship yesterday. They told me if there were any delays that they would contact me well....nope not an email nor a phone call. Yet they dont mind calling me to varifiy the billing info. I had to talk to the head mgr. on duty to get any results because they were saying they could not ship the battery seprate. When I talked to the mgr. he said the smart bay battery wont be avl. for atleast 12 more days!!!! And the case is out of stock and wont be avl. for 3 more days!!! So now the case and the battery are out of stock. He tried to tell me the battery needs to be sent with the comp or taken off the order haha I laughed...He also sugg. to leave it in for "optimal proformance". haha.... This company is a joke..I let him know they better ship that battery sep. since he was the mgr. to do what he had to do to fix the prob and that they dont want me calling back. This is the first comp. I have bought from them and this process is rediculous. This company has too much work and not enough resources, good thing dell bought them out! The actual build time the mgr. told me is one day and the other quality inspections take another 1-3 days. By the time you wait the almost 2 months to get your $4000 notebook somthing else better is already out. I know its always this way when it comes to technology but I dont believe that it should take almost 2 months to build a pc, yes they have lost of orders, understood but, that also means its time to E X P A N D !!!! I can remember in 1998 when dell was just like this. Almost 2 months for a computer.

PS: Beware buying the smart bay batt. the mgr. told me they buy these from 3rd party and they dont keep these instock...ouch!!!

It seems the best way to order it is just the laptop with no extras. After you receive the laptop buy the extras (at 10% off what you would have paid at laptop ordering time).

Correct..!!

if you chose the optical drive as ur first choice that will be the one installed in ur computer the second bay will be either a second choice...and it will be in the box... get your smart bay now because you may not be able to get it later... on the RAM and hard drive i would get the least you can and upgrade urself...

Where'd you read that?

if u order things after you have ur computer u have to pay shipping and taxes so that eates up ur 10% discount... so u might as well order it with it...unless ur buying ur RAM or hard drives from another source...

Alright I have another question now...while it's rather off-topic I don't see a need to make another thread. The system I'm looking at is with a 8700M graphics card. A lot of the research I've done on this card seems pretty negative, but most of it is dated from the summer. So it's a lot of pre-release speculation and very early demo testing. I know this card will perform nowhere near as well as the 8800M, but I'm mostly curious to know how it will perform in relation the 7950GT in my desktop. (Don't think I can afford the jump to 8800.)

I know I'm kind of taking a shot in the dark, but does anybody have an AW system (I guess either a m15x or m9750) with this card? How has your experience with it been? Any input is helpful. Thanks.

The extras I was referring to are the Smart Bay options (except the DVD drive). For instance if you order one with a Smart Bay battery and it's not in stock they might not ship until they get them in, delaying your order.

There is NO comparison, mobile grfx cards are castrated bretheren of their desktop cousins, as such your desktop card (Which is a very strong high end card) will destroy any mobile version be it an 8700 or 8800.

You're right. You can't compare a laptop to a desktop no matter what. Even if it's a DTR. But, the good thing about a laptop is that you can carry it around with you wherever you need to game.

Interesting...my desktop card is indeed impressive, and I was expecting that the 8700 wouldn't quite compare to it, but I thought that the 8800 would not only match it but exceed it. That's not the case? I think I'm becoming increasingly convicted with my decision to just save the $350 and go with the 8700. My desktop is probably coming with me to school anyway, and from what I've heard from people with the 8700, it's more than sufficient. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, the 8700 is awesome for on-the-go gaming. The 8800mGTX is quite a beast though. It's comparable to the desktop 8800 GTS, which is not too bad.
But, I've been hearing of problems with the 8800mGTX in the m15x. Owners have been having problems of the GPU underclocking in the middle of games very often after reaching a certain temperature. It's a strange issue which hasn't been fully resolved. This happens to only some m15x owners. Most likely because of overheating maybe.

The m8800 is currently the pinnacle of laptop grfx cards, throw em in sli on a higher end model and there is even more shine! That said, mobile cards are no where near the horsepower of desktop cards. Heck, look at the new hotness desktop ATI 3750 X2's or the NV 8800GTX Ultras (what ever the flag ship models are right now) both r usually in dual slot configs to accomodate proper cooling and they are frickin huge! lay 2 down side by side and they darn near approach the size of a laptop ha. The mobile 8800 is what maybe 2 inches square and a 1/4 inch tall or thereabouts, make no mistake there is alot ALOT of horsepower missing in order to get down to that size.
