Inspiron 1705 / 9400 256M Geforce 7900 replacement?

Thread Starter
I've got a Dell 9400 with a 256M Geforce 7900 video card.
Recently, it gave me a blue scrren of death: page_fault_in_non_paged_area.
No further indications of the source of the error.

It will boot in safe mode / safe mode with network drivers.
Running the dell diagnostics via pre-windows boot up, it fails video memory tests - just about every test and the LCD has lines/pixels on it.

I've powered it down, let it cool, tried to boot - any attempt to go into widows mode with video drivers fails. I've replaced the nvidia drivers, tried running a system restore point - no bueno.

I'm assuming that the video card is dead at this point - any suggestions on a replacement. The GeForce 7900 seems to run around $175 and upgrades from there approach the $400 range. Too much for a ~2 year old laptop...
Suggestions?

Try and get a good FX2500M from ebay, its as good as a 7900gtx. I can push mine to over 10,000 3dmark 05. You should be able to get one for $200 ish. The seller who sold mine was premiselaptops. His ebay shop

Or get an ATI x1400. They are cheaper and hopefully you can find one on ebay.

But if you really need GPU power then the 7900's should serve you well

Note: You'll lose alot of GPU perfromance going from a 7900 to a 1400

No, came with a 1 year warranty.
I think I've given up gaming on this system, so for now - maybe just having it work would be fine.

Any ideas on what it would be worth as is? $200-$300 range - or is that unreasonable?

you could pick up a X1400 card for about $50.00 and get it back working.

IMO that would be a reasonable cost, and with a X1400 should be worth more than without a Video card

i'm in the same boat and am in the process of buying a good e1705 with the 7900gs card locally, gutting it for the card, and selling it back locally with a replaced 1400 via craigslist.

takes a little time and effort, but if you're able to float the money for the laptop, its a good priced fix. that shouldn't cost too much, but there's slight risk of course
