Does Dell replace 7900gs anymore?

My 1.5yr old laptop was having some overheating issues. So i called the rep and he said he might be the video cards fault since it has been replaced once already. He told me to send it back to the repair depot.

Funny thing, Overheating is not the only problem i have been having,

Motherboard has been replaced twice because of problems with headphone port
Fan Assembly has been replaced because of Overheating
7900gs Go has been replaced once because of Overheating issues.

hopefully, they can replace my 7900gs yet again. Fricken laptop is having issues every 6-7 months.

well lately from what we've been seeing they try to swap the part and usually with one that is at or near death. They'll probably send the lappy back to you with a broken 7900 GS.

Then you get to call them back and complain about the fact that they just replaced a bad part with another bad part, and they'll offer you a replacement laptop.

You'll say ok. They'll send you a inspiron 1720 with a 8600 GT in it. You'll call them back and complain that your old laptop was better (which it was and they know it), and after much back and forth they'll send you an M1730 that will probably be broken or damaged. You'll call again to complain and they'll offer to send you a new with amazing specs. Then you'll get notice a few days later that the order has been cancelled and your account has been flagged for fraud because of all the warranty claims and you'll have to get in contact with so and so (who incidentally never returns your phone calls). a few weeks later miraculously your account will be cleared.

After about 2 months you'll get a nice new M1730 with one or two 8700s or SLI 8800s.

did I miss anything?

lol, nope. I would say that is pretty accurate for most people.

the only thing you are missing, is that when you get the M1730, it will be broken and have a scratched up lid, and when you call to get a replacement they will tell you that the video card is on back order and you have three more weeks to wait.

IMO, this is probably why Dell is not earning as much money as they can. It also contibutes to a bad (& growing) reputation for them. I just don't get it why they couldn't fix any issues at the first attempt. Being able to do so will have save them a lot of money & build a better quality reputation than they have.

Heard of the popular phrase "Dude, you got a DELL" when your system fails & ever wonder why?

Well with their 17" laptops its in particular their videocards and power bricks.
They just tend to die after a few years. Otherwise their laptops seem pretty reliable.

Here is my situation. I was wondering If I can make a legal case out of this. My wife has an E1705 with a 7900GS not overclocked or anything. Around 6 months later I get artifacts all over the screen. After days dealing with shoddy technical support they telll me that I have to send it to a depot. Now being in the computer business I know how crappy these depots are. I insisted they send me the part, but rather than void the warranty as they say I took pictures of the machine inside and out and sent it. Then about 2 weeks later they say they wont have the card for about a month. This went on for 2 weeks after. I tell them to send me something. So they send me another machine. It was in good shape but It was supposed to be like or better to my old machine right? Wrong ram was 533 not 667 and the wireless was a cheap broadcom not intel. After some hours on the phone they sent me the parts. I was told to wait for the Vid Card. So I waited... 1 week later. WHOAH!!! I got my old machine back from the depot saying the machine is not salvagable??? I was so pissed I almost threw It away but anyway the old machine came back and the ram is different there are scratches on the casing and the keyboard looks really bad. Why am I being screwed? Why are they touching stuff that has nothing to do with the problem. Replace the vid card and get out. In spite of all that I tell them that my vid card broke on my other machine with another warranty type. and 2 days later dell man came with 7900GS in hand. Is Dell Screwing people who buy refurbs? I wanna sue just because they screwed me. Any advice from net users out there???

The 7900 GS was out of stock for some time. Within the last two weeks to a month they have received another shipment (There are a few customer advocates that frequent these boards and one posted that the parts were again available). I don't know why they were dicking you around so much but it's probably standard operating procedure since most people don't know any different and are going to feel better because they think at least they're trying something.

If they agree to give you back equiv parts to what you had in there with the memory. Your situation is not specific to refurbed systems, they do this to everyone.

Nice thread necromancy BTW.

The other alternative which has always worked for me, is to ask them to redirect you to their returns department, then yell at them, most often I have got more done through them, then through customer service, or tech support, especially when you have a repeat issue. After two times, I go right to the returns department, and I have used the phrase "Tell me were to send this garbage back" with the intention of just sending them the laptop and they have bent =)
