Gateway P6831FX Laptop USB Problem

I just recently purchased this notebook, got a great deal from bestbuy ($1199 + free game). The only problem is that the "plug and play" aspect of it does not work. It won't even recognize a flash drive, the system just keeps asking for the "Driver CD" that contains the driver info. This happens to EVERYTHING USB, even my portable WD HDD. Any thoughts or inputs? Thanks.

I took it back to bestbuy and they were stumped also, I bascially waited 2hrs for nothing then got sent home.

TAKE IT BACK AGAIN, and get it replaced, if they won't fix it then send it in to GATEWAY, you do have a OEM 1 yr. warranty from Gateway?..............the P6831FX sure seems to have a lotta Hardwear problems I'm reading about around the Web, maybe this notebook isn't such a Great deal after all, hell for that price I want NO hardwear problems, and you shouldn't have to upgrade it at all to make it work faster & better, just cuz it's a newer notebook and it cost more doesn't always mean it's a better deal

I love to take it back, but the wait for a new one is now 1 month +. Hm...I wonder if reformatting and reinstalling Windows Ultimate would change anything? (Student pricing for Ultimate is $150, not too bad imo.)

You can give the format a try, but, if that dosen't fix the problem, then send it into Gateway and have it repaired.......the turn-around-time is about 5 to 7 days time for repair........GATEWAY SERVICE DISPATCH:
1-877-285-6043 7AM to 7PM Pacific Standard Time, at the very least when USB ports start to fail that means a BAD Motherboard, witch can only get worse............call them, tell them all your problems with it, and they will send you out a FREE SHIPPING BOX...............use your 1 yr OEM Gateway Warranty, that's what it's for..........I wouldn't wait for BEST BUY to do anything, that day may never happen, so, don't be foolish.............the longer you wait the worst it will get, and you don't want that ,I'm sure.............

this machine is not so much different than any other machines that did have issues with recognising some external usb devices, regardless of os sometimes

Denb45 i don't know why u are knocking this notebook. There are NO laptops with this video card at this price range... if you think it's overpriced just keep it to yourself. 1199 is SUPER cheap for a gaming notebook and 1200 is not alot of money these days unless you want a basic machine for under 500 bucks to surf the net and do basic tasks. (that's why I own a t-1616.) ALSO, this laptop is SUPER FAST as it is! People that are upgrading it because they purchased this laptop for such a low price. Mine is bone stock (except for my Blu Ray upgrade lol) and it runs every game perfectly! Looking at your Sig, you upgraded your Gateway to make it FASTER too so I don't understand some of your comments.

"you shouldn't have to upgrade it at all to make it work faster & better" when you upgraded your Ram and HD etc on your laptop. (your laptop cost around 700 to 800 dollars right? + your upgrades... I did quick right up on a similar model awhile back)

CNet btw rated this notebook at 8.5/10, one of the highest rated laptops on that site.

Anyways, regarding this issue.

Go to Device manager and check the univesal bus controller and check if there are any issues with the drivers. (red X) Perhaps you should try uninstalling a few of the USB device drivers and restart your PC. Windows should reinstall the USB drivers.

If this doesnt work, wait for the PX-6831 to be back in stock or pay 3k for an Alienware or Dell with the 8800 card. (now that's overpriced) Good luck!

I'm not a PC Gamer, I have a PS3 & a Xbox360 for that, CPU & Video power means little to nothing to me at on a PC, the upgrades I did (the ones you see in my sig) cost me little to almost nothing at all, and, came off my old MX6447 my current notebook MX6453 only cost 500 bucks, (on ebay) and that's was good enough for me and what I do on a PC ,if you think paying that much for a notebook is worth it to you then , that's your right to think and buy whatever you like, (it's your money) I wouldn't pay that much for something that has that many problems, (I went to my local BEST BUY Today) and was told that the Gateway P6831FX Laptop was pulled form the sales stock, due to many problems, and that they may NOT be getting any in stock real soon, due to Vista SP1 being released on MARCH 18th , 2008, I'm not sure if any of this is true, but a BB Dept. Manager was nice & kind enough to tell me this inside info about the Gateway P6831FX Laptop, and WHY it's still out-of-stock, so, the bottom line is, BB may NOT be getting anymore of them back in stock to sell unless Gateway fixes all the problems, I'm not saying that you or anyone else will have the problems reported, but you never know for sure.............

I'll try the un-installing of the USB drivers in the device manager and see what happens. It's a great laptop! Crysis runs perfectly fine at mid settings and i'm hoping later on i'll be able to upgrade to a Penryn. Thanks for all the posts, i'll check back with results. 8)

My brother ordered one also, but he's on a waiting list. Best Buy states that "Gateway is out of stock and won't be shipping out new ones until the end of March (which I hope comes with Vista SP1 pre-installed.)

Good luck MREK9R. Btw I also have a PS3 to game on along with my alienware desktop. The problem is, I can't take those machines to my friends house or when I travel. This is when the FX-6831 comes in handy

Un-installing USB drivers were un-successful. It actually created more problems. I had to do a system restore.

But, did the System Restore correct the problem tho? you didn't say? witch one did you do, a Full Factory System Restore? or a OS Windows Restore, if it worked for you, it might help someone else out with the same problem?
I agree, Go to All Programs> Recovery Center > Factory System Recovery. U can also create the factory restore DVD's here too. You might also want to do a full windows update afterwards. If this doesnt work, unfortunately your USB ports maybe defective

I hope this fixes your issue...

Alrighty, I installed Ultimate and now the plug and play's working! BUT, there is ANOTHER problem now. Every time I play a game (WoW, Crysis, Warcraft III) the screen keeps going blank--like the system crashed. I can still hear the music and I can still hear myself moving (the system still responds but my screen has gone blank). I installed gateway's newest nvidia drivers. Any thoughts?

What drivers are you currently using? Frankly i'm getting very sick of this...it's just trouble after trouble. I tried using the ASUS/HP-Compaq v.167.58 Vista 32bit but the problem still exists.

It's not a cooling factor also, the FX runs on the Belkin laptop cooling system "Cool Elevate Flow."

back to your USB issue...I have the same problem with all my devices...mouse, external wd hdd, thumb drive, speakers, usb hub . The solution: tell vista that you know the location of the driver and than just type in c:\. Problem solved. For some reason the implicit path is incorrect out of box and vistas are searching for the driver in c:\(will update when I get home to post it correctly). I know it`s too late but better than never.
Drivers: I am running 169.09 from laptopvideo2go.com with no problems. Currently playing world in conflict!
Hope it`ll help.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind for future help to others. As for my video problem, it turns out my FX had a bad GPU and luckily Best Buy just received a new shipment so I got a new one. Everything works flawlessly now!! Finally!!
