AMD Or Intel Processor?!

Hey all! First post here so I'll keep it snappy...well I'll try!

I'm after a new laptop, mainly for internet and media use, although I'm a keen Flash and Photoshop user so it needs to run both of them with general ease.

I've seen a few that I like but I'm on a bit of a budget of about £400-500:

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(31168)HP-Pavilion-Notebook-G6061ea-AMD-Turion-64.aspx

and

http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...N0352508&s=dhs

Now, I'm bit of a NOOB with the processor side of things so I'm really unsure of which is better?

They both have 2GB RAM which I'm sure will be plenty, but the HP laptop has an AMD Turion 64 X2 TK-57 - 1.9GHz L2 512kb - NVidia Geforce 7000M.

The Dell has Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5450 (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache) - Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100.

Now the AMD has a higher clock speed yet a lesser L2 cache......so which is better?!

If anyone could help then I'd be hugely greatful!

Cheers

get the amd, better graphics controler, and im sure its cheaper, and will do the same thing, higher clock too, but im unsure what the 1.9 compares to in intel terms

id get the amd tho

The Intel CPU will run cooler and Perfom better.

Pick and choose your CPU from here and compare the benchmarks. The AMDs just don't hold up.

amd is cheaper, and if it has an amd video card not on board, OP's media will look/run better

amd has the top dog title when it comes to viewing media and games, nvidia has it when it comes to fps

and temp is temp, i dont think many people keep their laptop right on their lap (durrr) for longer than a few hours cause of their battery life, and preformence, benchmarks are so silly, yeah it will get the job done both ways of intel and amd

but who really counts how fast it does it? you?

Cheers for the replies both but I'm still as confused as ever!

Chances are I'll never play any game on it so as long as it can handle a couple of programs running together at a pretty steady rate I'll be more than happy.

Does the L2 cache make the Intel a better option? Even though I'm sacrificing the clock speed?

I realise I'm asking the same question again here but I'm still clueless!

Cheers for the help guys!

Josh

EDIT - I've just been reading up on the AMD processor. As far as I can see it actually has 2 x 512kb cache (one for each core) so does this make the difference less great between the two or do they level out roughly about the same?

Actually, Intel's level 2 cache is not nearly as good at transfer as AMD's HyperTransport system (Intel is adopting their own version of this within the next year or so). However, Intel's processors are so much more efficient than AMD's processors currently that it doesn't matter. The difference is in the architecture and design, which won't show up on your average spec sheet.

Ok Cheers Djembe! So I'm better off going for the Intel Core 2 Duo yeah? I think I'll keep shopping around and try to find one with a slightly better clock speed then go for it!

For laptops Intel, Desktops AMD. At least that is how I buy.

Is that just a general choice, or is the AMD processor I've listed better than the Intel one?

depending on whom you talk to.

i m an AMD fan but having no issue acknowledging that Intel is currently holding the lead.

But just a personal side bit of boring history of why AMD getting a lot of attention to the point of causing heart burn for Intel came down to 3 things in the past - price, support within the Linux community and Sager/Alienware machines

cheers ...

Turion x2 was meant to
compete with the 32-bit Core Duo.

Even the slowest Core2Duo outperforms the AMD Turion x2.

On laptops, my vote is Intel.

Cheers for the help guys I really appreciate it. I've been continuing my hunt but I think that the Intel processor should do the job for me. I'm not expecting it to be some kind of super computer on my budget, so as long as it can run a couple of decent programs at once then I'll be away!

As I said, HUGE thanks to everyone, now I'm just doing a final bargain hunt to see if anyone can offer me any freebies!

Found a pretty class bargain I think. A much better processor, 2GB RAM and a good price.

I think I've found my new toy!

Based on the statement in your original post that media use was one of your priorities, I'd suggest something with a dedicated video card, if you can find one in your price range. The notebook in your link has integrated video, which can decrease your media experience.

I realise that the Intel integrated graphics aren't the greatest, but would they not be adequate for using flash and photoshop? As I said, I don't want it to play games so as long as they're good enough for those 2 then i'd be more than happy.

I will keep hunting though!

Cheers

photoshop and flash don't require dedicated video. make sure you have adequate ram though.
