3790 ATI Driver Issue

Sorry to post this in general but there doesn't seem to be any activity in the 3790 issues forum.

Up until recently I had the original video driver that came with my 3790. I had tried several times to update it without success so I just left it alone - wondering if my frame rates were suffering.

I started having an issue with the screen flickering. The duration and time from startup was random. So I did a restore point and downloaded the latest ATI mobility 9700 drivers and it still flickered. I noticed my max resolution wasn't what I know the 3790 is capable of.

Today I installed an even newer ATI Mobility driver and still am only getting a max resolution of 1680x1050 and I know it used to be 1900 x 1200 or something like that. So far no flickering though

Anyone have a good driver link that will give me the full resolution and maybe been tested with World of Warcraft or other games?

thanks
damianicus

PS: One more Q. I've got 1 gig of ram. Does the 3790 have an empty slot for a 2nd gig and what ram type is it?

Well weird. Maybe I'm confusing my 24" Dell's resolution. I just now did a system restore back to the original driver and it's max (without screen scrolling) was 1680x1050.

By the way. I tried installing Omega drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/ and they did not work at all.

I sure would like to update it with a "working" ATI driver or...

Has anyone pulled out their 3790's ATI vid card and replaced it with an nVidia?

I recently had this problem with my Dell Inspiron 8200's screen flickering and then it would get bad enough that I couldn't see. This would persist even through a reboot.

It would quit after I removed all power, took the notebook apart, made sure all connections were tight and put it back together again. Soon after, it would start again though.

Later, during a period when it wasn't flickering, I disabled my screen saver. I was doing this for another reason, but I noticed that the screen never went back to flickering. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. But, give it a try and see if it does anything for ya.

I turned ON the screen save and turned all the power savings to never. And I still got flickering.

So NO ONE has ever successfully updated their ATI driver for the 3790?

Here is a vid I shot of it flickering:

Yes your ram is expandable. (Two SO-DIMM sockets)

And I would suggest installing these. I don't know which versions you installed. can you post them?

That's exactly how mine started flickering. Then, it eventually got to where it was an unreadable screen that looked like a scrambled TV channel. This thread is bad luck... mine actually started doing this again just the other day, a few days after posting in the thread.

The driver I have now is the one the lap came with:
7/17/2004
Versions: 6.14.10.6467

On my desktop I use Nvidia vid cards and have never had problems updating the drivers. However every single time I've tried to update the ATI Radeon 9700 series drivers it causes problems. And by problems I mean I boot into a blank screen in windows. Or crazy lines. Or if it does work, Warcraft can't recognize my native resolution.

I did when I owned a 3790. I got the driver from Sager's website (I'd go look it up for you, but I'm stuck on craptacular dial up from work atm). Iirc I had some trouble though too (sorry been too long, I don't remember much about it). Never had the issue you're experiencing though.

good luck.

I still have my 3790 and I've updated my ATI drivers a number of times. Here's a thread that all 3790 owners should look at occasionally. Be aware that when updating the drivers from ATI's website you may run into problems due to the 75mhz screen refresh rate on the 3790. I know it's a fairly long thread but you'll want to read through the whole thing to make your driver update as painless as possible. Specifically, on page 10 of the thread a discussion is started about video driver updating issues and the fixes people came up with.

Also, whenever I update my ATI drivers I always read this guide - it walks you through doing a clean install, which apparently is more important for ATI owners than for nVidia owners, and tells you how to tweak your settings.

Also - I see you have the WSXGA monitor; the highest resolution for that monitor is 1680 X 1050.

EDIT - I just realized the last post in this thread was 3 months ago. I guess it's still good info if someone else wants to update their drivers and stumbles across this thread....
