He has the first gen m15x. The one coming to me has the new 45nm CPUs.

i have the first batch ones (m15x) i will try and move it around a lot etc and see if any cracks occur since if it is defetective that's what warranty is for.. i'll just be without it if it actually happens..

so this 5% of people reporting problems maybe blown way out of proportion.

A 5% failure/problem rate is pretty much unacceptable across most manfacturing standards. That is 1 in 20 laptops that go out the door have not passed QA.

5% that have been reported. It's probably higher than that, but the users don't notice cracking or for some reason don't push their comps to see the overheating. And some just don't care enough to report their problems and find work-arounds themselves.

Don't go around "banging" the keyboard like the article explained. lol
I never banged my keyboard no matter how mad I get. Weird explanation. The shipping's the problem.

It could also be a result of the case assembly process. Maybe the technicians are putting the case together wrong.

Maybe that's the reason the black cases aren't for sale now?
As black absorbs more light than white, more light = more heat.

Steve,

Alienware-Frank reported out of thousands, there are only few numbers have directly report the problems such underclocking, overheating, cracking etc. to Alienware.

However, I have been trying to tell them, the statistics might confuse them (even Alienware). It's because I doubt there are thousands 8800m gtx are out there right now. Since Alienware is selling m15x with default 8600m gt, the numbers could be deceiving.

I tried to get the message over there, but my voice was unheard there at notebookreview (maybe because I am new there). Alienware should look into m15x with 8800m gtx and see if all of em are common and known issues (tho last few days Alienware reported they managed to replicate the problem). If only people like Steve with such reputation could wake Alienware the hell up...

A few!!!!!!! Then that must mean that Notebookforums must make up the Percentile that do have troubles. Wierd how such a small market group of enthusiast can all come together on the same site and have the smae issues.

This Issues is alot larger then AW wants to report. So far even 2 test units have the same issues. So a few systems isn't exactly correct if you ask me.

any company is going to downplay if there is any issue... if they came out and said we F%$# up and the laptops are all crap then there sales would plummet and people would lose faith in the company... kinda like Bear Sterns they were trying to down play there financial problems and they did it for a long time until just recently...

Alienware has officially released a statement saying that they will release a BIOS update to correct the overheating and underclocking problem that m15x owners are having. Woo Hoo!

Read about it here link!

I don't see anything being said about the cracking problem. But, most likely later on AW will release another statement regarding this.

Alienware thinks its probably people are banging on the keyboard. Or pressing harder than they should.

I think this is a possibility, but probably not the root cause.
If they are not able to reproduce the cracking at AW, then I would say that shipping is a factor as well.
The design of the case could also have a weak point at that point in the case.

I am sure that AW will get it figured out.

In AW's defense, they probably only had a few reports from owners directly who called them.
Working in Manufacturing myself, you are looking at trends. Most of the problem reporting was being done on the forumns and not to AW (At least from what I was reading).
I know that AW monitors the forumns and finally realized that they had some issues and are devoting resources to resolving the problem.
AW could train their CS people a little better in dealing with initial reports on new Product lines.
Sometimes, it takes a little longer to give an answer to a problem.
As someone else stated, companies don't what to come right out and state that they totally messed up. That's just the way it is.
Be patient and AW will resolve the situation.

Reread the quote. He did not say a few systems, he said a few direct reports to AW.

It's common for people to complain and pile on issues on the internetz.

That doesn't mean there isn't an issue. AW has now said they've gotten the downclocking to happen in their labs, so they're on it. If you know AW's actual past, you'll also know that they've been very responsive to legit issues experienced by their customers.

No matter how fast they address these issues, it won't be fast enough for some, including some that don't have the issue, or even own an Alienware.
