ok so i have looked and done my research on a reliable notebook for a few days now and im just not completely committed right now to anything that seems stable. i keep hearing about the 8800M GTX video card and would like to consider that into my purchase. what notebook would be cheapest in the range im looking? any and all suggestions would be great. anything over 1500 will kill me.

you could do the 8600GT for under 1500, but you're not going to see anything with 8800*** in it for that price.

From my research I think the Gateway P-6831FX is the absolute best bang for the buck. Best Buy has it for $1349 and it has a 8800GTS in it. The only downside it it has a low end Core 2 Duo processor at 1.67Ghz. The hard drive is huge at 250gb and the 3gb of memory is sweet. I think it may be capable of RAID but don't quote me on that. Supposedly very easy to upgrade the CPU if you want to.

Probably about half as fast as the 1730 I ordered at less than 1/4 the price, that's a very good bang for the buck in my book.

Best you can do is the Gateways. $1599 for a 8800 GTS

If time isnt a factor you could wait till the end of the year where the 9800m is suppose to launch which would lower prices for the 8800 gtx then i might fight in ur budget

I usually have the OS and driver/app disc's that came with my computer, and just reformat and reinstall windows back to how it was when I first bought it.
Also makes it nice and "clean" for the next owner, less likely to give any OS related problems.

Go on www.dell.com and customize your own Vostro 1500/1700, that is your best bet.

The 8800GTS wont break your bank, but I agree the 1.66 is a doosy. You can opt for the 2.0 but its a bit more expensive, but it will get rid of that bottleneck CPU.
