would this be the better laptop to get or should i stick to the gateway?
and if the aw needs upgrading is it still possible or is it out dated?

my goodness, you should DEFINITELY stick with the Gateway because it's got virtually the same CPU and a video card that's about SEVEN TIMES BETTER

how's that for an "urgent reply?"

Depends...

AW warranties are not transferable, and I think the 6600go is the best card AW offered in the m5500. You can upgrade the processor and memory, but it wouldn't perform as well in games as the laptop you're looking at with an 8800m vid card. The 8800 is the latest vid card offered in laptops, and the 6600go was several generations ago.

Both have pretty slow processors... so it's going to come down to how much you want to spend, if you want a warranty, and the vid card difference.

You should way whether you want a newer warrantied laptop with a great vid card, or an older used Alienware.

Thanks Djembe, I got a chuckle out of how you responded.

I agree, stick with the Gateway (As long as it is new)

so if i get the gateway and save up can i upgrade the processor to a better one myself? if so which should i get and what other upgrades do you recommend? and what price range am i looking at for the upgrade(s)?

GATEWAY.

You can save up the money to even buy a Penyrn processor and put it in the P-6831-FX. There's a thread made by one of the forum members here that goes into detail on upgrading the Harddrive, LCD screen, Memory, and Processor.

The Processor will undoubtedly cost a couple hundred maybe the $400-$600 range. It depends on what Processor you buy actually.

Alienware warranties are non-transferrable which is not recommended. And the 6600go card is nothing compared to the 8800mGTS. But, the good thing about the AW is that it is more portable and has better battery life.

Get the Gateway.

For all the reasons stated above.

Yeah, the new Gateway will serve you better in the long run I believe.
