Taking a Dell out of the USA voids warranty???

When I bought my notebook, Dell made me mark/check a box that said something like: "I'm not going to take the notebook out of the country".

And I want to know what happens if I do take it out of USA. I'm in the south border and I just need to cross the river to be in Mexico.

My laptop has a dead hard drive and I want to contact Dell and ask them to replace it, I bought a 3yr Total Care Warranty, but I'm affraid they will track me and find out I'm not in the USA. Will they void my warranty? I need to know and ASAP!

I was planning to contact them from Mexico, ask them to fix my laptop and then, I was going to go to USA and be there the day they tell me they are going to go and fix it.

I registered the laptop with my uncle's address, and I don't really want to go and bother him 2 or 3 days.

What do you think? Should I contact Dell from the USA. Will something bad happen if I contact them from Mexico?

how will they track you from Mexico? From your phone?

Do you have a USA area code cell phone?

I was actually planning to contact them via chat. But I think I will call from the US.

The point here is: I don't want to be a pain in the ass to my uncle and friends. You know, I have to ask them to help me, to lend me their phones, etc. That's why I was asking if Dell would void my warranty. I wanted to contact Dell from my house in Mexico, in order to bother my uncle as little as posible.

If you contact them from outside the country, they will not support the laptop and will void your warranty.

Do you have access to a cell phone with a US area code?

They won't VOID your warranty, they just won't ship to/from outside the states, or send anyone onsite. You can chat & have the drive delivered to a US address, and then you can just swap the drive & mail the old one back from the states.

OK...now, who's right?

Will they void my warranty?
or
They won't void my warranty, they just won't service it outside the US.

Please, I really need your help.

Anyone has tried something like this before?

Thank you all!!!

I travel outside of the country with my machine all the time - taking it out of the country doesn't void the warranty in any way. As long as you call for service within the States, they'll service it. The only limitation is that the warranty is not good in other countries, meaning they will not ship parts there.

The checkbox you saw meant that you agree not to EXPORT the machine (for sale outside of the US), not that you would not carry it out of the country:

"The export of any product and software purchased from Dell must be made in accordance with all relevant laws of the United States, including and without limitation, the U.S. Export Administration Regulations. This may require that you obtain a formal export license or make certain declarations to the United States Government regarding product(s) to be exported, their destination or their end-use."

Now I understand. Thank you very much for your help.

If anyone else have more opinions, I would love to hear them.

Thank you all for your help.

Well...I did it!

I contacted them via chat and asked them to replace the damaged hard drive. They only asked what happened, I told them, gave them the error number, and then they asked for an address to send the hard drive, I gave them an US address and that was it. Two hours later and my hard drive is on route. That's fast!

theyre asking if you plan on shipping it out of the country, part of their reselling question... part of a government requirement for export compliance to make sure their notebooks dont get in the hands of countries that the US has an embargo against

I bought my M170 just before I went to Afghanistan and let the guy on the phone know this. What he said about the warranty is that they will honour it, they will just NOT pay to ship it out of country. I of course pay for shipping to them, so that is no worry. However, since my military mailing address was technically one of the bases in Canada, it wouldn't of been a problem for me if I needed warranty work.

SO....Your warranty IS good, you CAN ship it to them, but they WILL NOT ship it back to you out of country.

This thursday I finally got the new hard drive. I hate DHL, this is the 2nd time they can't find the address (the first time was another address), the package was in the city since saturday, but they didn't try to deliver it 'till monday, and then the tragedy happened.

Anway, I had a Seagate and Dell sent me a Fujitsu. This hard drive seems to be a lot quietter, my seagate was always making "clic" noises since day one.I hope the fujitsu will be faster too.

Thank you all for your help.I really appreciate it.
