Can't make it work at all, or can't make it work in 5.1? I had those speakers for years and I am pretty sure that they will never support 5.1 via coaxial cable, but You can use the three stereo mini jacks cables just fine!

If you have the proper sigmatel drivers installed, upon plugging a cable into the mic port on the side of your computer you will be greeted with a nice little application where you can reconfigure the three ports on the left for front, surround, and center.

I am having the same problem. With the spdif connected right click the speaker in the task bar, go to playback devices, double click digital output device, go to supported formats, and then you can test each format and it will give each and everyone of your speaker volume. I know the connection is working but when I play a song in WMP it shows that it is outputting to my laptop speakers and not the spdif. I can even make the digital output the default and still nothing. Any ideas here? My M1710 with XP works fine with no setting changes.

well i couldnt understand wht u said, I have xp also but i cant find wht u said, any how, to find each speakers volume, u can go to control panel then sound and audio devices and under volume tab choose advanced, now under speakers tab choose 5.1 surrond sound then ok
now double click on the volume icon in the taskbar then choose speaker volume and u will have the volume for each speaker.

about the spdif it works with me (i use the coax cable) only if there is a song or a game or and thing else running.

if u have the same speakers when u connect the coax to the speakers it will tell u in the speakers lcd no digital data but as soon u run a song or something else it will work

by the way u have to make sure under volume icon in the taskbar then advanced that the spdif interface is ticked to make it work with the coax cable

if u need more help just say

cheers

I think he's talking about the component one. Its newer and came with the M1710. I have both breakout cables as I have a XPS2 and M1710. If I had a spdif cable I could test this out but it seems likely to be the cause with all of these people having problems.

Your adaptor looks like the second picture in the first post. The one you want looks like the one in the second post.

Search dell for "component adapter" to see it there.

The easiest way is to get X-Fi Extreme Audio Notebook.
I've got Z-5500 and it's connected to my little 1720 beastie via OPTICAL cable.

So, firstly you get better sound, secondly you get a bit more FPS and finally you get optical sound output, which is recognized as the best (but it only gives you stereo sound/PCM/5.1 SPDIF output, so, to hear Half-Life or smth you'll definitely need analog docking station).

That's it.
